While still in high school, he recorded his first solo effort, Mythologies, released on the Carpe Diem label, and produced by future 97 Murry Hammond. Miller and Hammond then formed the group Sleepy Heroes, a power-pop trio that released one CD - Under A Radio Sun - and promptly disbanded.
In the early 1990s, Miller started performing country songs acoustically with Hammond with the moniker Ranchero Brothers - a duo that performs occasionally to this day.
Miller's second solo album The Instigator was released in 2002. In 2006, he released The Believer. Recently he released the self-titled Rhett Miller in 2009.

Things That Disappear
Rhett Miller Lyrics

That she'd forgotten her senses she was running around and carrying on
They were wrong but of course
She had her faculties on her she was honorably carrying on
She don't wonder anymore 'cause she knows what love is for
I know it might sound weird but all of these things here
Are things that disappear
Are things that disappear
She's got blood she's got eyes
She's got a voice in her head and she listens every once in a while
She don't wonder anymore 'cause she knows what love is for
I know it might sound weird but all of these things here
Are things that disappear
I know it might sound weird but all of these things here
Are things that disappear
Is that all yes it is
Put his stuff in a box and put him out of her memory
Now he's gone and away but he will never be out of her misery
She don't wonder anymore 'cause she knows what love is for
I know it might sound weird but all of these things here
Are things that disappear
I know it might sound weird but all of these things here
Are things that disappear
In Rhett Miller’s song Things That Disappear, the lyrics speak about a woman who was once talked about as if she had lost her senses but in truth she was carrying on with honor. The song talks about how she does not wonder anymore because she knows what love is for. This indicates that the woman has gained a sense of clarity and understanding about love and why she needs it in her life. Even though things may disappear in life, the love that she has found is something that will always remain.
The lyrics further emphasize how the woman has various attributes that make her unique. She has blood, eyes, and a voice in her head which she listens to every so often. These are all things that make her who she is but they are also things that can disappear. The song goes on to suggest that this woman has perhaps suffered heartbreak and put someone out of her memory. Although this person is gone, the pain still remains.
The song overall is upbeat and catchy but it carries a message of the transient nature of life. Things come and go, but the love that we can find in others is what can remain constant. The song also recognizes that we all have our unique attributes that make us who we are, but these things can also disappear. The message of the song is then a reminder to cherish the people and things that make our life fulfilling.
