Shake Sugaree
Rhiannon Giddens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have a little song, won't take long
Sing it right, once or twice
Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

Pawn my watch, pawn my chain
Pawn everything that was in my name
Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

Pawn my chair, pawn my bed
Ain't got nowhere to lay my head
Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

Pawn my tobacco, pawn my bike
Pawn everything that was in my sight
Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

Have a little secret, ain't gonna tell
I'm goin' to Heaven in a brown pea shell
Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

Have a little secret, ain't gonna tell
I'm goin' to Heaven in a brown pea shell
Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?

Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

Overall Meaning

Rhiannon Giddens's "Shake Sugaree" is a poignant and somber song that addresses the hardships of life and the sacrifices one has to make to survive. The song is set to a simple melody and is sung with a raw and unfiltered voice that adds to the emotional weight of the lyrics. The song starts with the singer singing about an unnamed song that they have that won't take long to sing once or twice. Then they reflect on their life and how they have had to pawn everything they own, including their watch, chain, and even their tobacco and bike. They sing "Everything I got is done and pawned" after each stanza, emphasizing how they have lost everything.

The singer's desperation is palpable as they continue to sing about pawning their chair and bed and having nowhere to lay their head. The line "Oh Lordy me, didn't I shake sugaree?" is particularly striking and has been interpreted in many different ways. Some have suggested that "sugaree" could be a reference to a dance or a type of music, and "shake" could refer to the singer's ability to dance or move to the music. Others believe that "sugaree" could be a euphemism for money, and the line means that the singer has done everything they could to make money but still lost everything.

The final stanza of the song is particularly moving as the singer reveals a little secret that they are not going to tell anyone. They sing, "I'm goin' to Heaven in a brown pea shell," suggesting that they have accepted their fate and have found peace in the face of hardship. This song is a powerful testament to the struggles of life and the need to sometimes let go of everything to find redemption.

I have seen Jerry Garcia sing this tune.
Now I know from whence it came.

Laura Nyro's first 4 albums are worth a taste test
the LauraLand4U channel delivers her work with first-rate photo collages

unique, forgotten writer + singer from late '60s ... very much covered by others who had hits, yet
I'm far from the only person who thinks her original versions are better than any of the covers

those are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th

she was a teenager still when the first came out
it is the most covered, but I'm not sure she had full control of the instrumentation choices on that one
nearly every song on the first got radio play at the time

this is something special too

I just discovered Rhiannon Giddens and her music. It reminds me of how little I know about this nation of 330 million. I was born and raised in NYC but spent most of my adult years traveling the globe in the military and State Department. I retired in NC and never heard of her. She is absolutely wonderful. I’m going to buy all her music for my listening pleasure. It’s a reminder that the noise around me is a distraction, while everyday people never get the attention they deserve. Keep up the good work. The nation needs you.

Lovely! It was my incredible privilege to sit at the feet of Libba Cotton when I was a teenager, and she was still a domestic in the Seeger family (Peggy and Mike were also teenagers)--and hear her songs, and gasp at her guitar playing. I believe if there is a heaven, and she is up there, she is smiling down on Rhiannon Giddens with amazement and happiness. Carry it on!
