Hard Enough
Rhubarb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyday we keep on pushing on.
Knowing we can only push so far.
Is it hard enough, is it hard enough
Hard enough.

Gentle breezes slowly failing me.
Still we level everything we see.
Is it hard enough, is it hard enough
Is it hard enough, is it hard enough

Blinding lights, a road ahead
Is it real to me or in my head,
And I can see what we all held on to
What do you hold on to?
What do you hold on to?
What do you hold on to?

If we believed that we could
If we believed that we should
And If we believed in the way we used to be'

And when we believed that we could
And when we believed that we should
And If we believed in the way we used to be'

If we believed that we could
And when we believed that we should
And when we believed in the way we used to be'

And when we believed that we could

And when we believed that we should
And when we believed in the way we used to be'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rhubarb's song "Hard Enough" appear to be about the struggle of perseverance in the face of adversity. The first two lines speak to the daily effort required to keep going, even knowing that there may be limits to how much we can push ourselves. The repetition of the question "Is it hard enough" throughout the song suggests a search for purpose or meaning in the struggle.

The second verse introduces the idea of external forces working against us, with "gentle breezes" failing and "we" (perhaps a reference to humanity as a whole) leveling everything in sight. The repeated question gains urgency as the verses progress, culminating in a plea to know "What do you hold on to?" The final lines suggest that by believing in ourselves and the way things used to be, we can find the strength to carry on.

Overall, "Hard Enough" seems to be a song about the human experience of facing obstacles and searching for meaning in the struggle. The lyrics are vague enough to allow for personal interpretation, but the repetition and crescendo of the questions throughout the song lend a sense of urgency to the message.

My father just made a strawberry rhubarb pie this past weekend for a family gathering and it was really good! I am typically not a fan of rhubarb, but when you add enough sugar..... haha.

I never take more than 1/3 of my rhubarb at one time. We are upper midwest zone 4. I give it time to recover then pull more later. have a rhubarb plant that grew from a small piece pulled from a mature plant. First I put the piece in a small pot and it grew pretty well until I forgot about it and went on vacation. Upon returning the plant was “dead” so I tossed it into the garden. The following spring it grew into a nice plant. I was so shocked. The plant in its second year is 5 feet wide. Its massive. I moved a couple small unhappy rhubarb plants to spots 6’ away from the big plant and am using them to border my garden bed and keep the edge weeds at bay. The ruffly frilly look is so cool and is very tidy looking. Now Im looking for plants to fill in between the rhubarb. If your rhubarb is unhappy, it shows. Be sure and find its happy place and it will reward you for decades!

Alaska?? Your season is much later and much shorter than the rest os the continent. So it makes sense that you can harvest in August.
