Born in Oxford, England, Lewis grew up in a family of teachers with two brothers, an older brother named Tom and a twin brother named George. His passion for music began at the age of 13 when he started playing the guitar. However, it was only later, after joining his brothers' band, that he began singing. Lewis attended Bartholomew School in Eynsham and also worked as a 'dinner lady' at Cokethorpe School. At the age of 19, he moved to London to study at the London Centre of Contemporary Music.
Lewis initially started writing songs and performing under the moniker Rhys Lewis & the Relics. His talent caught the attention of Decca Records, which led to the release of his debut solo single, "Waking Up Without You," in late 2016. Over the next year, he released several successful singles, including "Be Your Man" and "Reason to Hate You," gaining millions of streams. Lewis embarked on tours with James TW and JP Cooper during this time.
In 2018, Lewis released his major-label debut, the Bad Timing EP, which further solidified his growing fan base. The EP showcased his soul and blues influences, with his distinctive singing style and guitar skills shining through. Lewis continued to release a string of successful singles in 2019, setting the stage for his debut album, Things I Chose to Remember, which was released in July 2020. The album stands out as it was recorded on analogue tape, a deliberate choice by Lewis to ensure meticulous attention to detail and clarity in the music.
Lewis draws inspiration from artists such as Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, whose lyrics resonated with him as a songwriter. He also cites influences from Led Zeppelin and Bill Withers, particularly the latter's song "Lean On Me."
His songwriting covers various aspects of his life, addressing topics such as the portrayal of men in the media, mental health, and personal relationships. Many of his songs revolve around themes of heartbreak, including "When Was The Last Time," "Be Your Man," and "Hurting." Lewis finds performing his song "No Right To Love You" particularly challenging due to its connection to a personal heartbreak, as it evokes intense emotions and memories associated with the breakup.

And I don't watch the news
'Cause I lose faith in somethin' every time I do
Well I don't need to bury
My head in the sand
But I'm just tryna live this life as best as I can
Times get tough
'Cause I know I'm not alone
'Cause we all reaching for something
We're all craving change
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow
Is better than today
We're all searchin' for somewhere
Tryin' to find a way
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow
Is better than today
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow
Is better than today
It's not easy sleepin'
When I lay down in bed
'Cause I got all these worries runnin' through my head
And it's hard to keep pushin' forward
When trouble pulls you back
And you wake up even further from a dream you had
Times get tough
But I don't give up
'Cause I know I'm not alone
'Cause we're all reaching for something
We're all craving change
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow
Is better than today
We're all searchin' for somewhere
Tryin' to find a way
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow
Is better than today
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow's better
So just hold on when someone breaks you
Just hold on when fear shakes you
Just hold on when darkness takes you
Just hold on
'Cause we all reaching for something
We're all craving change
Hopin' tomorrow, tomorrow
Is better than today
So let's keep searching for somewhere
We're gonna find a way
To make tomorrow, tomorrow
Better than today
Let's make tomorrow, tomorrow
Better than today
Let's make tomorrow, tomorrow
Better than today
Let's make tomorrow, tomorrow
Better than today
Let's make tomorrow, tomorrow
Better than today
Let's make tomorrow, tomorrow
Better than today
Rhys Lewis's song "Better Than Today" is an upbeat anthem that speaks to the desire for hope and progress in troubling times. The first verse establishes a sense of resignation to the difficulties of the world, with the singer admitting that they don't bother with the news because it only causes them to lose faith. However, they also express a desire to live their life to the fullest and not give up when times get tough. This theme is carried through the chorus, which speaks to the universal human desire for progress and hope, with everyone searching for something better tomorrow.
The second verse delves deeper into the personal struggles that can arise from trying to maintain hope in dark times. The singer admits to being kept awake at night by worries and hardships, but still encourages themselves to keep pushing forward even when trouble pulls them back. The final verse is an empowering call to action, encouraging listeners to hold on through whatever darkness may come and keep searching for a brighter future.
Overall, "Better Than Today" presents a message of resilience and hope in the face of adversity, acknowledging the difficulties of the present while still striving for a better tomorrow.
