It’s crazy how in so many of these club fires extra exits have been bolted shut to keep people from sneaking out or in. It makes me wonder how many places I’ve been to that only had one working exit.

Just Cheryl

I was just thinking the same thing.

Shani maybe better not to know. I went to a lot of dances in the 60’s , can’t even guess

If it were not for YouTube and facebook I would never have know about this! May God bless the souls of all.

@Christopher - This would be considered the same as β€œblack on black crime” today.
- The documentary, clearly states that the Rhythm Night Club Manager, who boarded up the windows and back door and who’s wife was inside the club, was outside when the place caught on fire πŸ”₯ and that he suffered a heart attack and died at the scene. Sounds like justice. πŸ‘ˆ
- The white Fire Station, 4 blocks away, immediately responded and risk their lives putting out the fire πŸ”₯ within 20-30 minutes. Most of the 209 victims died from smoke inhalation, as oxygen masks didn’t exist at the time.
- It was end of the Depression; which would explain the mass grave, where over 150 were buried.
Just an unfortunate incident. God rest their souls πŸ™

Fire Marshal

@Christopher this could not be more untrue. Just because you didn’t know about it doesn’t mean no one else did. And there have been several night club fire since then that killed more which over shadowed this one.

Christopher

" Back then, particularly throughout the Jim Crowe-era South, ' Negro ' deaths were virtually ignored and largely considered irrelevant. Further obscurity surfaced later when rumors circulated THIS tragedy might have been the result of Arson. Either way, this awful tragedy didn't receive the full justice and recognition It deserved from society and the media. Today's generations must realize this was long before the Civil Rights movement and racial injustice was far more prevalent and widespread than in the 21st-century. "

A story that needs telling, and you did a superb job, doing justice to all the lives lost in the Rhythm Club and all the lives touched. I'm sure many Americans have never heard of this tragedy, and thanks to this documentary, they can. Thank you.
