It’s crazy how in so many of these club fires extra exits have been bolted shut to keep people from sneaking out or in. It makes me wonder how many places I’ve been to that only had one working exit.

@Christopher - This would be considered the same as “black on black crime” today.
- The documentary, clearly states that the Rhythm Night Club Manager, who boarded up the windows and back door and who’s wife was inside the club, was outside when the place caught on fire 🔥 and that he suffered a heart attack and died at the scene. Sounds like justice. 👈
- The white Fire Station, 4 blocks away, immediately responded and risk their lives putting out the fire 🔥 within 20-30 minutes. Most of the 209 victims died from smoke inhalation, as oxygen masks didn’t exist at the time.
- It was end of the Depression; which would explain the mass grave, where over 150 were buried.
Just an unfortunate incident. God rest their souls 🙏

I came upon this quite by accident. I had never heard of this fire, of the tragic loss of life and of the unthinking way the place was boarded up so no one could sneak in. The second deadliest nightclub fire , I guess second only to the Coconut Grove. Bless those who still are haunted by memories, I hope that it becomes more known so that at least a proper memorial to those who died can be erected. Bless you for posting this, it is heartbreaking to think that America could so easily forget.

My mommas cousin died in this fire. Momma is 95 from Natchez and can remember the incident like it happened yesterday..and she says my auntie wouldve been there too if my grandma hadn't threatened her with her life if she even thought about going to some dance that night.

Wow, this is an incredible story. I'm from Mississippi and this is the first time I've heard of this tragedy. I truly hope the community comes together and work to maintain the cemetery. A marker is definitely need to honor the victims. Thanks for bringing awareness to this story.

The town should pull together and advertise for volunteers to work to keep the cemetary up. That includes landscapers and professional gardeners. Photographs could be taken and published in the local newspapers and that would be free advertising for the professionals who worked to keep it up. The town should raise money to have a monument with all of the names of those who died and indicate that it is possible that some of those who died are most likely burried elsewhere.

I was in Natchez a few years ago and saw a plaque about the fire by the river. I also had never heard of this before. I was shocked. And I just makes me mad that this kind of thing still happens. Including the Coconut Grove Fire two years later. I didn’t know about the unmarked graveyard until I saw this video.

Oh wow. I just heard about this tragedy from Ashley says so channel. I cannot believe that I have never heard of this before and isn't widely recognized like so many other tragedies(but then again I can). My condolences to all of the families, the town, and everyone who has been affected. Rest in peace to everyone who has lost their life in this fire. Yet over so many decades later these tragedies keep on happening. Thank you for enlightening and educating everyone about this tragic event in history. Its 2019 and this is the first time that I have ever heard of these poor lost souls and their couragous,traumatized families/community. God bless them all.There definitely needs to be cemetary restoration and a momument dedicated to those folks that lost their lives back then.Wonder if modern science could help identify some of the dead so their families can be reunited with them? Its so terribly sad.

This video revived a very old memory for me. I have seen the memorial plaque on a trip down the Mississippi with my family when I was 8 years old in 1958. We of course went through Natchez. I had no idea at the time that sll the victims were African-American, nor did I know the details of the fire. Thank you for putting a human face on this tragedy. As someone else has remarked, it is always the same fire --too many people, not enough exits.

I wish someone would ask anybody who ever saw the inside of the place how it looked. I’ve thought 💭 Spanish moss? Did the guy think swamp was the festive decor or was it literally all he had to work with. I’ve also thought that flit probably didn’t help, but the dried moss alone would hardly be safe since you don’t have to spray dried vegetation of any kind with gasoline to get it to work as tinder. I love that these folks acknowledge no ill will on the part of the ones who made these decisions. You never hear middle-upper class people do anything but pretend everything bad in their lives is the result of active efforts by others to deliberately harm them particularly. God bless the victims, their families, and everyone who had to contend best they could with the grisly aftermath of this tragedy. Rip.

From what I have read, the moss was placed there not so much as a decoration but as something to spray mosquito repellent on. Flit mosquito spray was petroleum based, and was combustible. Much like kerosene. I was a firefighter for 29 years and read every book and article that I could find on the tragic, preventable fires in our history.

This is the only historical fire where every patron was black, and the ONLY one I didn't know anything about until a few years ago! That makes it 3rd deadliest single building fire in US, minus the 2 anomalies, and Pearl Harbor wasn't a building.

I hope their being black isn't why no one ever heard about it, HOWEVER, it doesn't explain why there was never even a book on it.

I was paranoid about fires long before The Station happened. That one affected me most because it's the type of music I know best, and I play in dives regularly.

Winds of March Journey/Perry tribute band you never heard Natchez burning? It’s one of the best known fires in history to music fans thanks to the black musicians who memorialized it. I would say the Rhoads opera house and even Iroquois theatre are less widely known than this one, which is legendary. I’m a white girl, but maybe it depends on where you grow up or something as to which fires people talk about. Body count is not directly correlated to fame in these matters, as some fires just capture the public imagination more than others for a variety of reasons. Listen to some of the blues songs about this one, and you’ll understand why everyone in my part of the world has heard of this one.

As far as I can tell, this is the only similar fire without a thorough investigation. BTW, have you read up on the Colectiv fire in Romania in 2015? In almost every way, it's the same as The Station, only in this case, 4/5 of the band died. (Illegal pyros igniting improper insulation, over capacity, crush at the main entrance/exit, etc.) Look at the 2013 Kiss Nightclub fire in Brazil (231 dead), or the 2009 Lame Horse club fire in Perm, Russia (>150 dead). All from improper pyros indoors.

I have been visiting live music establishments all my life but in different capacities, as a patron and as a photographer. Before I made this documentary, I never looked once for exits. Now, that is the first thing I look for when I enter any building.

My great grandmother was from there but had moved a few years before this. I remember asking her why all of my great grandfathers family visited him but never anyone from her side of the family. She told me they died in this fire. Im sure there were some maybe distant cousin left but I assume her close relatives were in this fire. Ive never met anyone from that side of the family.

Like I said in a post about the Cocoanut Grove fire (also in the 1940s) - it's the same fire over and over again. It's the same things - blocked exits, flammable materials, no precautions, too many people in too small a space, etc. People never learn.

Grenfell Tower Block fire in London UK 😶 Happened not long ago , enquiry still going on . Whole building covered in flammable ' decorative panels ' that not only spread the fire but also released cyanide gas . The panels were installed to make the building look prettier because it's located in a part of London in which some of the poorest people live and also some of the wealthiest . Let's make it look nice because the wealthy people don't like the look of it . Enquiry ongoing .

I recall this incident, watching this sometime, years ago, maybe not this same exact documentary, but one like it. I've forgotten all about this, until I came across it again. I specifically remember, the gravesites, and what reminded me, was the overgrown weeds. Then it all (the memories) came flooding back. Another 'nightclub' fire, not as well known, but equally devastating!!!!

You would think that after one terrible fire after another, for years, that such disasters could be permanently avoided. Yet in 2003, 100 people died in the Station nightclub. Even with laws and inspectors, there are still horrible firetraps that kill way too many people, who die in agonizing fear and pain. And this happens all over the world on a regular basis. Not enough exits, or exits that are sealed shut, coupled with flammable furniture and coverings on walls and ceilings.

This is a hard one. Like some many stories of Black America. The way the dead were treated was medieval, but I am sure there are many other mass casualty events involving people of colour, where the bodies were treated as so much rubbish.
What needs to happen:
In the short term keep the graves clear. I recommend green shade cloth pegged down over the earth, to stop regrowth. But old synthetic carpet turned upside down and spray painted green will work just as well.
A search of records to find out how many bodies were processed.
The cemetery site needs surveying. Also geophysical scans to locate and mark out all the graves.
Then the community needs to decide whether they want to exhume the mass graves and give all the victims a proper burial.
For funding, I recommend online crowdfunding, and a lottery.

I don't agree that this was lost to history, but it certainly has not held its proper place in history, and I thank you for elevating it. I wonder if that's because what some people call the "dominant culture" (us white people) saw this as something "those people" did to themselves? The community, the performers, the audience, the club owner, and all the dead, the injured, and the grieving were African Americans. I get the impression from this video that the authorities, whom I assume (maybe incorrectly) were white, didn't even investigate this. Every other club fire I've read about, fatal or not, was fully investigated. Could the authorities not be bothered because the club owner was dead and all victims were black? Did they think the purpose of investigation was punishment, and not prevention of future tragedies? Who knows how high-profile news stories and a thorough investigation of this fire might have affected things at the Cocoanut Grove a couple years later, or any other club or theater fire with similar factors? Are victims of more recent club fires indirect victims of racial social segregation in Mississippi in 1940?

Thanks so much for the reply. It seems this fire really does have an important place in history, if not the notoriety it deserves. I am glad we learned at least something from it, and that at least some things were changed nationwide as a result of this horrific tragedy. My incorrect guess that there hadn't been an investigation was based on this video not referring directly to one and the fact that the Wikipedia page didn't refer to one either. I cannot imagine being a member of the Natchez community when the fire happened. I imagine myself living under such sadness and devastation, wondering whether I'd have preferred to be inside the club or outside. Every breath would feel as heavy as lead, maybe stolen from someone else.

The photo at 20:38 hurts my heart after I read that the Boy Scouts escorted the bodies of Walter Barnes and his dead band members on their way back to Chicago. The face of a child like that makes it so real, which is why it hurts, yet it somehow offers hope. The boy in that photo clearly understands what's happened and the honor of his role in community healing. His is not a face of defeat. But then I wonder if he lost a parent or an aunt or someone else in the fire. Like they said in the film, everybody lost someone. He is showing a real sense of purpose. But maybe I read too much into a photo.

Thank you again for a very moving documentary, and for capturing the stories of the living elders who survived the event before they were no longer able to pass their stories on.

Wow, that is a lot to go through. There were many reasons why the story is not very well known. The fire was investigated by several national agencies as well as local law enforcement. As a matter of note, because of the tragedy and scope of this fire, national agencies changed their guidelines to investigate every reported club fire in the U.S. that resulted in loss of life. Many of the fire safety guidelines that we take for granted today are as a direct result of the Rhythm Club Fire, they just took years and some took decades before they were implemented.
