He was born in Saigon, French Indochina, now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to an Italian father and a French mother. He moved to Rome, Italy at the age of 11 where he attended school and started his career as musician coming to success around 1972. He also lived in the USA and Ireland. In 1976, Cocciante covered the Beatles song "Michelle" for the musical documentary All This and World War II.
In 1991 he won the Sanremo Festival with the song "Se stiamo insieme", and for Christmas 1997 legendary Spanish operatic tenor and friend Plácido Domingo invited him to sing at Domingo's annual Christmas in Vienna concert, together with Sarah Brightman and Helmut Lotti.
As of 2008, Cocciante has three musicals running, probably Notre-Dame de Paris being the most known. This musical may later be put into competition against another musical in progress, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (musical).

A mano a mano
Riccardo Cocciante Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
E a mano a mano mi perdi e ti perdo
In "A mano a mano", Riccardo Cocciante sings about the passage of time, the loss of love, and the possibility of reconciliation. The song provides a poignant reflection on the transformative nature of time and the changes it can bring to a relationship. The lyrics suggest that as time passes ("a mano a mano"), things can be lost - smiles, love, and hope - but they can also be retrieved if one is willing to reach out and hold on to what is important. The song is both melancholic and hopeful, conveying a sense of longing and nostalgia for what once was, while also looking optimistically towards the future.
The opening lines of the song convey the idea that time is constantly moving ("a mano a mano") and that it can be both beautiful and cruel. The wind blowing on the face, stealing a smile, is a metaphor for the fleeting nature of happiness, while the old season that is about to end could represent the transition from youth to adulthood, or the changes that can occur within a relationship. The second stanza is more introspective, as the singer reflects on a past relationship and the memories that have been erased by time. The use of the image of a room where there was not much money but a lot of hope, adds a sense of nostalgia and longing to the song.
In the third verse, Cocciante seems to be speaking directly to his former partner, acknowledging that they have both lost something, and that what they had before may have seemed absurd in the present time. However, he still holds out the possibility of reconciliation, calling on his partner to take his hand and return to him. The final lines speak of hope and the possibility of finding joy again, even in the midst of pain and adversity. All in all, "A mano a mano" is a bittersweet song about the complexities of love, loss, and the passage of time.
