He was born in Saigon, French Indochina, now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to an Italian father and a French mother. He moved to Rome, Italy at the age of 11 where he attended school and started his career as musician coming to success around 1972. He also lived in the USA and Ireland. In 1976, Cocciante covered the Beatles song "Michelle" for the musical documentary All This and World War II.
In 1991 he won the Sanremo Festival with the song "Se stiamo insieme", and for Christmas 1997 legendary Spanish operatic tenor and friend Plácido Domingo invited him to sing at Domingo's annual Christmas in Vienna concert, together with Sarah Brightman and Helmut Lotti.
As of 2008, Cocciante has three musicals running, probably Notre-Dame de Paris being the most known. This musical may later be put into competition against another musical in progress, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (musical).

Su quella seggiola
Stavolta ascoltami
Senza interrompere
È tanto tempo che
Volevo dirtelo
Vivere insieme a te
È stato inutile
Tutto senz'allegria
Senza una lacrima
Niente da aggiungere
Né da dividere
Nella tua trappola
Ci son caduto anch'io
Avanti il prossimo
Gli lascio il posto mio
Povero diavolo
Che pena mi fa
E quando a letto lui
Ti chiederà di più
Glielo concederai
Perché tu fai così
Come sai fingere
Se ti fa comodo
E adesso so chi sei
E non ci soffro più
E se verrai di là
Te lo dimostrerò
E questa volta tu
Te lo ricorderai
E adesso spogliati
Come sai fare tu
Ma non illuderti
Io non ci casco più
Tu mi rimpiangerai
Bella senz'anima
Na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na
The lyrics to Riccardo Cocciante's song "Bella senz'anima" express a feeling of betrayal and disillusionment in a failed relationship. The singer speaks directly to his former partner, asking her to sit and listen to him without interruption. He tells her that he has wanted to say something to her for a long time, and that living together was useless. The relationship lacked joy and tears, and they had nothing to add or share. He admits that he too fell into her trap, but now he is moving on and leaving room for the next person who will suffer the same fate. He knows that she will continue to manipulate others, and when she is with her new partner in bed, she will pretend to be someone she is not. The singer is now aware of who she truly is and will not fall prey to her again. He tells her to undress if she wants, but he will not be fooled again. She will regret losing a "beautiful soul," as he calls himself.
The lyrics reveal a deep sense of hurt and regret in a love that has gone wrong. The singer feels that their time together was a waste, and he now sees his former partner clearly for who she is. He recognizes the manipulation and lies and chooses to walk away. Through the song, Cocciante addresses a common experience of human relationships, namely the loss of trust and disillusionment that can lead to heartbreak and pain.
