He was born in Saigon, French Indochina, now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to an Italian father and a French mother. He moved to Rome, Italy at the age of 11 where he attended school and started his career as musician coming to success around 1972. He also lived in the USA and Ireland. In 1976, Cocciante covered the Beatles song "Michelle" for the musical documentary All This and World War II.
In 1991 he won the Sanremo Festival with the song "Se stiamo insieme", and for Christmas 1997 legendary Spanish operatic tenor and friend Plácido Domingo invited him to sing at Domingo's annual Christmas in Vienna concert, together with Sarah Brightman and Helmut Lotti.
As of 2008, Cocciante has three musicals running, probably Notre-Dame de Paris being the most known. This musical may later be put into competition against another musical in progress, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (musical).

Era già tutto previsto
Riccardo Cocciante Lyrics

Fin da quando tu ballando
Mi hai baciato di nascosto
Mentre lui che non guardava
Agli amici raccontava
Delle cose che sai dire
Delle cose che sai fare
Nei momenti dell'amore
E tu mi dicevi "ti amo
E non lo amo,
Non lo amo".
Era già tutto previsto
Fino al punto che sapevo
Che oggi tu mi avresti detto
Quelle cose che mi dici
Che non siamo più felici
Che io sono troppo buono
Che per te ci vuole un uomo
Che ti sappia soddisfare
Che non ti basta solo dare
Ma vorresti anche avere
Nell'amore
Ma quale amore ...
Era già tutto previsto
Anche l'uomo che sceglievi
Il sorriso che gli fai
Mentre ti sta portando via
Ho previsto che sarei
Restato solo in casa mia
E mi butto sopra il letto
Ed abbraccio il tuo cuscino
Non ho saputo prevedere
Solo che però adesso io
Vorrei morire.
The song "Era già tutto previsto" by Riccardo Cocciante tells the story of a man who has just been dumped by his lover. The lyrics are filled with a sense of resignation and foreboding, as if the singer knew from the beginning that this would happen. The first verse describes the moment when the man and his lover first met, and how she kissed him secretly while her boyfriend wasn't looking. The man reflects on how he knew from that moment on that they would end up together, but also how he knew that it wouldn't last.
The second verse describes the present moment, when the woman is breaking up with him. He knew it was coming, but it still hurts deeply. She tells him that they aren't happy together anymore, and that she needs a man who can satisfy her in ways he can't. He feels helpless and lost, realizing that he didn't have the power to change her mind.
The final verse is the most heart-wrenching of all, as the man contemplates his future without her. He knew that she would leave him, but he didn't know just how painful it would be. He embraces her pillow and wishes he could die, overwhelmed by the sadness of losing his love.
Overall, "Era già tutto previsto" is a powerful and emotional song that captures the heartbreak of lost love. It explores the idea that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we can't change the course of our lives. The inevitability of our fate is something that we must all come to accept, even if it means losing the people we love.

Era già tutto previsto
Everything was already predicted beforehand.
Fin da quando tu ballando
Since the moment you were dancing,
Mi hai baciato di nascosto
You kissed me secretly,
Mentre lui che non guardava
While he wasn't looking,
Agli amici raccontava
He was telling his friends
Delle cose che sai dire
About the things you can say,
Delle cose che sai fare
And the things you can do,
Nei momenti dell'amore
During the moments of love,
Mentre ti stringevo forte
While I held you tight,
E tu mi dicevi "ti amo
And you told me 'I love you,
E non lo amo,
And I don't love him,
Non lo amo".
I don't love him.'
Fino al punto che sapevo
To the point where I knew
Che oggi tu mi avresti detto
That today you would tell me
Quelle cose che mi dici
Those things you're telling me,
Che non siamo più felici
That we're no longer happy,
Che io sono troppo buono
That I'm too kind,
Che per te ci vuole un uomo
That you need a man
Che ti sappia soddisfare
Who knows how to satisfy you,
Che non ti basta solo dare
That just giving isn't enough
Ma vorresti anche avere
But you also want
Nell'amore
In love,
Ma quale amore ...
But what kind of love...'
Anche l'uomo che sceglievi
Even the man you chose,
Il sorriso che gli fai
The smile you give him,
Mentre ti sta portando via
While he's taking you away,
Ho previsto che sarei
I predicted that I would be
Restato solo in casa mia
Left alone in my house,
E mi butto sopra il letto
And I throw myself on the bed
Ed abbraccio il tuo cuscino
And I hug your pillow,
Non ho saputo prevedere
But I couldn't predict
Solo che però adesso io
Only that now I
Vorrei morire.
Wish to die.'

Un grande musicista, una sensibilità incredibile. Questo e diversi altri suoi brani sono veri capolavori di eleganza e di emozione. A mio parere può essere tranquillamente accostato ai grandi della musica classica, per talento e qualità.

"Everything was already planned" is a wonderful piece, very full of nostalgia and some of his best work that I've heard. I don't understand all the words but I do understand the feelings. Lovely music.
