Dequantes Lamar first considered a career in professional baseball, but in 2008, the Atlanta native issued the single "Stay Down" featuring the Stack Money Boyz. Things came to a halt when he landed in jail for a year on burglary charges, but upon his release in 2011, Quan began to make up for lost time. Hooking up with the Atlanta crew Loyalty Ova Royalties and becoming quick friends with member CEO Teezy came next, but Teezy's untimely death later in the year put a stop to Quan's planned mixtape debut. He would re-emerge a year later on the Think It's a Game label and release the mixtapes I Go in on Every Song plus Still Goin In. The year 2013 began with a tour opening for Trinidad James, along with a guest appearance on Gucci Mane's Trap House 3 album. In the summer, Quan issued the infectious club track "Type of Way," which cracked the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also became a member of Rich Gang, and co-headlined the 2014 mixtape Tha Tour, Part 1 with Birdman and Young Thug. The tape received widespread acclaim, and the non-album single "Lifestyle" reached number 16 on the Hot 100. Quan released the track "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)" in 2015, and it became his biggest solo hit, reaching number 26.
Rich Homie Quan continued releasing mixtapes, and in 2016 he landed a record deal with Motown. March 2017 saw the release of the single "Replay," which appeared on the Back to the Basics mixtape. Led by the singles "Change" and "34," his debut album, Rich as in Spirit, arrived in March 2018, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard 200. He then put out the EP The Gif, and Coma followed in 2019. Quan resumed releasing solo material in 2021, with the singles "Daily Bread" and "To Be Worried." His EP Family & Mula appeared in 2022. ~ David Jeffries & Paul Simpson, Rovi

To get me where I'm at
I had to make choices in the past
To get me where I'm at
It ain't bout you, but it ain't bout me, yeah
It's about that paper coming with green, yeah
So much money it don't make sense no more, I'm saying
I'm at the point where I can't get no more, I-I-I'm playing
Aye fuck a crew I'm tryna build a dynasty
I got my momma a new house, I got my daddy a new shop
Told my brother he can have any car off the lot
Got my sister out the hood so my nephew ain't gotta suffer
Got my side ho a spot just for somewhere else to fuck her
Got my grandma a new van cause she love them motherfuckers
Got some chairs for my haters, I can't stand them motherfuckers
Make you dance motherfucker, I swear that's what them bullets did
Steve Harley clean rolling white boys call them bullet heads
Ha these niggas be playing I swear they don't want it
No sleep, no zan. I'm on the molly geeked up to the next damn morning
And if you steal from me I'll kill you baby
Abortion they say life's all about choices
I-I made choices in the past
To get me where I'm at
I had to make choices in the past
To get me where I'm at
It ain't bout you, but it ain't bout me, yeah
It's about that paper coming with green, yeah
So much money it don't make sense no more, I'm saying
I'm at the point where I can't get no more, I-I-I'm playing
Around with a check so you can't fire me
Aye fuck a crew I'm tryna build a dynasty
I-I-I keep my head straight, my bed made
I stay in touch with Billy Ray even though that fed case
Still pending on him I pray for him everyday
With a 2 million bond its best he play it safe
And I ain't scared to say a damn thing to the jury, ho
We was shooting a video how they robbed the jewelry store
And they still ain't got no witness
And I know it ain't none of y'all business
But I just want y'all to listen
And see how the system tryna fuck my nigga
F-Fucking life up, other niggas ain't like us
Morning breathe better try Trident, don't try us
It's like a fan in the battle how I'm blowing dough
It ain't bout where you been, it's where you goin'
I-I made choices in the past
To get me where I'm at
I had to make choices in the past
To get me where I'm at
It ain't bout you, but it ain't bout me, eah
It's about that paper coming with green, yeah
So much money it don't make sense no more, I'm saying
I'm at the point where I can't get no more, I-I-I'm playing
Around with a check so you can't fire me
Aye fuck a crew I'm tryna build a dynasty
The song "Choices" by Rich Homie Quan is an anthem in praise of the rapper's hard work, struggles, and how he has managed to make it big as a musician. The song recognizes the fact that making choices is an essential part of life and that every decision we make paves the way for where we are headed. Rich Homie Quan acknowledges the choices he had to make in the past that led him to where he is now. He also emphasizes that money has become so central to his life that he can't imagine living without it. He is at a point where he is playing around with a check and has reached a stage where he can't get any further, hence his focus is now building a "dynasty" instead of a crew.
The chorus of "Choices" highlights the rapper's generosity towards his family, friends, and loved ones. He has given his mom a new house, his dad a new shop, and his sister has moved out of the hood with her son, ensuring that he doesn't have to suffer like she did. He has secured his side chick a new spot to keep their affair a secret, and he has even bought new chairs for his haters, implying he doesn't mind having them around as they keep him moving forward. The song also touches on police brutality cases, court cases, and the rapper's inner demons that he battles daily.
In summary, the song "Choices" by Rich Homie Quan is a powerful anthem, an ode to his struggles, and his motivations. He acknowledges how far he has come and urges his listeners always to make the right decisions that lead to success in life. The song reinforces the idea that money, while it can significantly contribute to building a comfortable life, can't buy happiness or true fulfillment, and in the end, what matters most is the legacy we leave behind.
