So What
Rich Wyman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So what if I don't like you.
So what if I don't give a damn.
So what if it's just a phase I'm going through.
No you won't give me answers, answers are only lies.
So what if I open my veins.
So what if I walk in the rain.
So what if we don't survive.
I'm just looking for answers, but have I really tried.
No you won't give me answers, so far they're only lies.
And I don't need no more of your lies.
I don't need, I don't need no more of your lies.
Of your lies, of the same old lies.
I'm just looking for answers, but have I really tried
No you won't give me answers, so far they're only lies.
So what if I don't like myself.
So what if I don't like you.
So what fi I don't give a damn.
So what if it's just a phase I'm going through.
So what.
So what.
The lyrics of Rich Wyman's song "So what" reflect the angst and frustration of the singer who is struggling with self-doubt and uncertainty about their place in the world. The repeated phrase "So what" is a defiant and nihilistic response to these feelings of inadequacy, suggesting a sense of detachment and indifference towards their own emotions and relationships. The singer acknowledges that they are looking for answers, but feels that these answers are elusive and potentially deceptive.
The line "No you won't give me answers, answers are only lies" implies a sense of distrust towards those who might try to offer guidance or support. This mistrust may be related to the singer's struggle with self-acceptance and a fear of rejection. By declaring that they don't need "no more of your lies," the singer is rejecting the idea that anyone else has the power to dictate their sense of self-worth.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of tension between the singer's desire for connection and their fear of vulnerability. The lines "So what if you make me cry / So what if we don't survive" suggest a willingness to take risks and endure pain in order to find meaning, but at the same time, the repeated refrain of "So what" suggests a defensive posture that prevents true intimacy from developing. Overall, the song captures the ambivalent and conflicted emotional landscape of someone who is struggling to find their place in the world.

I had the pleasure of hearing Rich Wyman playing a show right after 9/ll at my college. There were maybe 20 people in the audience that evening. He talked with us, took requests, and was just an all-around great guy. I was impressed by his music, and I still have the discs.
