Richard Anthony, de son vrai nom Richard Btesh, est un chanteur français, né le 13 janvier 1938 au Caire (Égypte). Son père est un industriel d'origine Syrienne, sa mère est la fille d'un diplomate Anglais basé en Irak.
Il passe toute son enfance entre l'Égypte, l'Argentine et l'Angleterre, puis en France où il intègre le lycée Janson de Sailly à Paris. Il devient donc polyglotte. Après un bref séjour en fac de droit, son père décède à Milan (Italie), il se met alors à vendre des réfrigérateurs en porte à porte pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille.
En 1958, influencé par la pop anglophone qu'il connaît bien, Richard Anthony décide d’adapter ce nouveau son sur des textes français, il enregistre alors « You are my destiny » de Paul Anka et « Peggy Sue » de Buddy Holly. La maison de disque Columbia lui donne sa chance mais ces deux titres passeront inaperçus. Il faudra attendre son troisième 45 tours où apparaît « Nouvelle Vague », une reprise des Coasters, pour qu'il soit enfin reconnu. Ce fut un succès énorme. S’ensuit une série de tubes, dont le fameux « Et j'entends siffler le train » en 1962, enregistrés entre Paris et Londres.
En tout, 21 tubes classés numéro 1 des ventes : il est aujourd'hui encore, le seul chanteur français ayant atteint un tel record.
Il acquiert en 1964 un avion privé qu’il pilote lui-même pour faire ses tournées, des villas à Saint Tropez et Marbella, un hôtel à la Jamaïque, une maison dans la vallée de Chevreuse, un chalet à Crans, des motos, voitures et plusieurs bateaux… Il a eu 11 enfants et s'est marié deux fois.
En France en 1965, il obtient un grand succès avec « Je me suis souvent demandé », l'adaption d'une chanson néerlandaise de Bobbejaan Schoepen. Il en fera aussi un hit en Argentine sous le titre « A veces me pregunto yo ».
En 1968, il adapte le concerto d’Aranjuez de Joaquin Rodrigo. Très vite, c'est un succès mondial, on parle de plus de huit millions d'exemplaires vendus.
Il a moins de succès dans les années 1970, il divorce de Michelle. Après deux années sabbatiques passées à Saint-Paul-de-Vence, il revient très fort avec « Amoureux de ma femme » en 1974 . Puis s’ensuivent d’autres 45 tours et un 33 tours Non Stop (1978).
En 1978, il part à Los Angeles avec sa femme Sabine pour faire de la production, il veut à présent exporter des mélodies françaises pour le public américain. Il produira notamment Indian Summer l'adaptation Anglaise de « L'été indien » de Joe Dassin.
Il rentre en 1982 pour quelques mois mais se fait rattraper par la justice pour redressement fiscal, ce qui l'amène à passer trois jours en prison en 1983. Sa carrière semble alors terminée. Il fait cependant quelques rares apparitions à la télévision et recommence à sillonner la France pour les galas.
À la fin des années 1980, après un nouveau divorce et un grave accident de bateau, il s'éloigne du public. En 1993, il sort un coffret de 300 chansons chez EMI qui est rapidement triple disque d'or. En 1996, il reprend le chemin des studios pour réenregistrer ses tubes pour la France mais aussi pour l’Espagne avec l’album Sentimental.
Il publie aussi son autobiographie aux éditions Michel Laffont, il faut croire aux étoiles, d'après le titre d'une de ses chansons. Il fête ses 40 ans de carrière en 1998 au Zénith de Paris devant un large public enthousiaste.
Il revient à nouveau en 2006 avec les tournées Âge tendre et Têtes de bois, qui font salles combles partout où elles passent. Pour ses 50 ans de carrière, il prépare un nouvel album prévu début 2009.
De nombreux artistes comme Mariah Carey, le groupe A-HA, Alliage ou Les Enfoirés ont repris ses chansons et adaptations, sans parler des dizaines de reprises de la version découpée et orchestrée par Richard du Concerto d'Aranjuez.
Avec plus de 600 titres enregistrés et plus de 50 millions de disques vendus, il reste toujours dans les mémoires collectives.
