Break the Night With Colour
Richard Ashcroft Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fools they think I do not know
The road I'm taking
If you meet me on the way
Hesitating
That is just because I know which way I will choose

The corridors of discontent
That I've been traveling
All alone in search for truth
The world's so frightening
Nothing's going right today
'cause nothing ever does

Oh, I don't wanna know your secrets
Oh, they lie heavy on my head
Oh, let's break the night with colour
Time for me to move ahead

Monday morning coming down
Like understanding
Mama thinks you are the ground
Looking so frightening
Nothing's going right today
'Cause nothing ever does

Oh, I don't wanna know your secrets
Oh, they lie heavy on my head
Oh, let's break the night with colour
Time for me to move ahead

Time for me to break my cover
Time for me to move ahead

Been givin' up
You will come again

Oh, I don't wanna know your secrets
Oh, they lie heavy on my head
Oh, let's break the night with colour
Time for me to move ahead

Time for us to move ahead

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Richard Ashcroft's song Break The Night With Colour tell a story of self-discovery and breaking free from fear and negativity. The first verse reveals that the singer is aware of the doubts and judgments of others ('fools'), but he knows the path he's chosen to take. He's been wandering the 'corridors of discontent' alone, searching for truth in a frightening world where nothing goes right. Despite this, he remains determined and ready to move ahead.

The chorus then declares his desire to break free from the weight of secrets and fears that burden him, with the repetition of the line "Oh, I don't wanna know your secrets / Oh, they lie heavy on my head". He wants to break the night with colour, a metaphor for bringing positivity and light into a dark and uncertain world. The second verse adds to this feeling of uncertainty and fear, with the singer feeling overwhelmed by the weight of the world and the expectations of others. Yet, he knows it's time to break his cover and move ahead, and perhaps he wants others to join him in that journey, as the final line states, "Time for us to move ahead".

The overall message of the song seems to be one of hope and perseverance. Despite the loneliness and fear, the singer refuses to give up and instead chooses to bring light and positivity to a world that can often feel dark and overwhelming. The repetition of the chorus, with its catchy melody and powerful lyrics, drives home this message and encourages listeners to join in the journey of breaking the night with colour.

LYRICS

Do you know what's worth fighting for
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide
Did someone break your heart inside
You're in ruins

One, 21 Guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 Guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I...

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul
Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins

One, 21 Guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 Guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I...

Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone

When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died
You're in ruins

One, 21 Guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 Guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
One, 21 Guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 Guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

You and I

"I don't want to know your secrets, they lie heavy on my head." Only an empath/complete human could write that.

"I don't want to know your secrets, they lie heavy on my head."...actually, it sounds like someone who doesn't want someone else's burdens weighing on HIM....the opposite of empathic. As usual, this song is about, and is concerned with, "Ashcroft". Don't get me wrong....we are all selfish to greater and lesser degrees...and it IS a quite good song. From way back in 2006, when you could still hear music influenced by the Beatles in Western culture.

@@bellinghammond Narcissists WANT to know your secrets, and then use them against you. If someone can feel the pain of others too much, it becomes a heavy burden. Though I appreciate push back and admit I don't know Ashcroft at all, actions speak louder than words.

@kirabarsmith9353

@@bellinghammond As far as The Beatles, I think they're a psyop like most celebrities and "artists". Ashcroft did write a song titled "They Don't Own Me", which acknowledges the situation of most people doing what he does.

@bellinghammond

has the added benefit of having "me" in the title :/
