After that band's demise in 1999, Ashcroft began his solo career, releasing Alone with Everybody in 2000, Human Conditions in 2002 and Keys to the World in 2006. He performed vocals for the track Lonely Soul on UNKLE's 1998 release Psyence Fiction and his voice can also be heard on the The Chemical Brothers' album Come With Us track The Test.
He is good friends with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher and Coldplay's Chris Martin (whom Ashcroft thanks for 'letting me be myself again'), and occasionally plays as support at Oasis and Coldplay concerts, including the European and second UK legs of Coldplay's 'Twisted Logic Tour'. He recently described himself as 'the best support act you'll ever see'. The Oasis track "Cast No Shadow" is dedicated to him. Chris Martin introduced him as "the best singer in the world" when he performed "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (which Martin called "the best song in the world") with Coldplay at the London Live 8 concert in 2005. On his second album Human Conditions The Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson guest stars on the song Nature is the Law.
Ashcroft is married to Kate Radley, ex-Spiritualized keyboard player.
Why Do Lovers
Richard Ashcroft Lyrics

Stay in bed, don't think that it's lazy
Get ourselves another god
Don't let them tell us there isn't one (isn't one)
Stay, sweet honey
Life's so fast, ya know it ain't funny
Get ourselves another god
Like we are just skin
Can you behold
Know beauty within
Know beauty inside your body
You don't love any body
Why do lovers
Choose others
We circle, entwine one-another
In that mask that we wear with each other
Oh my god how I looked in that mirror
I looked in a hollow picture
It was something I could frame
That's right, sweet-heart
Life's tough now, life can be hard
Don't blame me for these pressures in life
Don't blame me for this sacrifice (sacrifice)
Ok, sweet-heart
Take your time, I know lovers they part
Time slows when you're in love
And time moves so fast when it's gettin' on (gettin' on)
'cause we are just skin
Can you behold
I know beauty within
Know beauty inside my body
I don't love any body
Why do lovers
Choose others
To mirror their pain, yeah
Slow down stranger
You know that you're in danger
These demons have got their own names, yeah
Ready for you to lay it onnnnnnnnn
Oohhhh
The lyrics of Richard Ashcroft's song "Why do lovers?" revolves around the struggles of being in a relationship and how it affects one's perspective towards themselves and their partner. The song suggests that the beauty one sees in their partner is just skin deep and that they should focus on finding the beauty within themselves. It also highlights the idea that lovers often choose others to mirror their pain and that we all wear a mask with each other, which sometimes makes it hard to see the truth.
The lyrics "Get ourselves another god, Don't let them tell us there isn't one" implies that the singer believes in the existence of a higher power, and that it can help one to cope with the challenges of life. The repeated phrase "Why do lovers choose others?" raises the question of why people choose to be with someone else instead of the person they are already with. The singer suggests that it may be due to the mirroring of pain or simply because of the mask we wear with each other.
The lyrics of "Why do lovers?" encourage listeners to focus on the beauty within themselves while also questioning the motives behind relationships. It is a deep and introspective song that deals with the complexities of love and the struggles that come with it.
