Overall Meaning

Richard Buckner's song "The Hill" is comprised of several verses taken from Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology. The lyrics excerpted for the song read like short stories or epitaphs, each detailing a moment of life and death from a different speaker. The verses are arranged in a cyclical pattern, with the final verse ("There is something about Death/Like love itself!"/...) leading back into the first verse, creating the sense of a recurring and eternal cycle.

i saw him on 'the hill' tour at chicago's old town school with heywood on steel and john convertino (calexico, friends of dean martinez) on drums. saw him many times since, but none so transcendent. magical show. this is a great clip, artfully shot and hell of one document of this underrated, underappreciated artist.

I didn't know where to put the link. The official Buckner website is pretty opaque. Anyway, maybe someone will like seeing the lyrics in order with a line-up of youtube links. I did use the studio version (Merge), though, not the live.
