He and his friends formed the country rock ensemble Abbittibbi in the 1970s. Desjardins played piano, guitar, and sang. When the group disbanded in 1982, Desjardins pursued a solo career.
He also found work scoring films, especially documentaries. This involvement in the Quebec film industry even led him to co-direct a number of feature length documentaries. As well as his singing career, he is well known for his environmental activism.

J'ai passé un bel été
Les yeux d’in nénuphars
Ça a commencé l’printemps passé
In’t’installée su’l’tit lac à côté
In là pour ça, si t’as besoin d’aide »
Un beau matin a m’lâche un call :
A m’dit : « T’aurais-tu ça une belle quenouille? »
Moi j’me suis dit, a s’cherche un mâle
J’y vas pareil
Pis Bang! Bang! Faut que j’m’efface, faut qu’j’débarrasse
Me vire de bord, me pogne d’in branches
Pis j’m’accroche le panache
Nous pauvres cervidés
Quand on aura des chars
On f’ra des défilés
Sur la Troisième à Val d’Or
On posera sur nos capots
Des têtes coupées de chasseurs
Pis on laiss’ra leurs cerveaux
Chesser dans l’congélateur
The lyrics of Richard Desjardins’s song Buck depict the story of a male deer enjoying his summer in solitude, until he meets a beautiful female deer with whom he falls in love. However, their relationship is short-lived, and she eventually leaves him after he fails to provide her with a quenouille, a type of wildflower. The story takes a dark turn when the buck encounters a human hunter and is forced to flee for his life.
The first verse of the song describes the beauty of the summer, with the buck enjoying the sights of the blooming water lilies and the prospects of life. However, the second verse introduces the drama of the story, as the buck begins a relationship with a female deer, which he describes as beautiful but challenging. The third verse takes an unexpected turn with the appearance of a human hunter, threatening the deer’s life and leading him to contemplate the potential future of deer and cars coexisting on the roads.
The song’s strong imagery and direct language make it a powerful commentary on the relationship between humans and nature. While it tells a specific story about a deer's experience, it also speaks to the broader issues of humanity's impact on wildlife.
