He and his friends formed the country rock ensemble Abbittibbi in the 1970s. Desjardins played piano, guitar, and sang. When the group disbanded in 1982, Desjardins pursued a solo career.
He also found work scoring films, especially documentaries. This involvement in the Quebec film industry even led him to co-direct a number of feature length documentaries. As well as his singing career, he is well known for his environmental activism.

mon beau panama
et ma canne blanche.
J'ai soif!
Señorita
The lyrics to Richard Desjardins's song "Senorita" are a contemplation on the nature of love and desire. The song begins with a series of questions as to whether the subject of the song is on vacation from love or lost in the pursuit of a bad brother. The singer then wonders what the subject is carrying in their luggage, questioning if they are searching for proof of their age, a one-way ticket, or the number of the person they spend their nights with. The singer then admits to being enraptured by the scent of the subject and consumed by a desire to dream.
The song continues with musings on the moon, which the singer says only appears to those who seek it out, and the possibility of finding love in the town of San Luis. The singer notes the contrast between those who drink from the fountains and those who wait for the light to come, like water at the bottom of a well. The song ends with the singer envisioning a future with the subject in a room where they will burn their shadows and the subject returning the singer's hat and cane. The song ends with the singer exclaiming that he is thirsty.
Overall, the lyrics to "Senorita" represent the singer's deep yearning for love and connection with the subject of the song. The song explores the complexities of desire and the difficulties of truly finding and connecting with another person.
