He and his friends formed the country rock ensemble Abbittibbi in the 1970s. Desjardins played piano, guitar, and sang. When the group disbanded in 1982, Desjardins pursued a solo career.
He also found work scoring films, especially documentaries. This involvement in the Quebec film industry even led him to co-direct a number of feature length documentaries. As well as his singing career, he is well known for his environmental activism.
Signe distinctif

Dansait, dansait
Dans ses pas
Au moment de leur disparition
Ils portaient
Un drap d'hôpital
Des culottes courtes
Un bel uniforme
Un sac de linge sale
Un paquet d'tabac
Un numéro nul
Une poupée sans bras
Et rien dans les mains
La laisse d'un chien
The song "Signe distinctif" by Richard Desjardins talks about the details of people's lives at the moment of their disappearance. In the first few verses, the singer describes the clothing and accessories of a woman who disappeared, highlighting the contrast between the white skirt and black t-shirt she wore. The woman also wore a necklace of stars and her heart was in evening dress. These details suggest that the woman was not your average person, but someone who cared about her appearance and wore her heart on her sleeve. The next verse describes a man who disappeared wearing work boots and a sweat-stained shirt. He carried his life on his back and a big piano on his heart. This suggests that he was a hard-working person who had many responsibilities.
The tone of the song changes with the next verse, which describes a woman who disappeared with a living child, wearing a blood-red dress and holding the weight of the earth in her arms. Her heart danced in her steps, suggesting a woman with a light heart despite the heavy burden she carried. The final verse describes people who disappeared with various items, including hospital sheets, short pants, a military uniform, a bag of dirty laundry, and even a toy doll with missing arms. The final line of the song, "Et rien dans les mains, La laisse d'un chien" (And nothing in their hands, the leash of a dog) suggests that despite the material possessions they had, they left behind nothing tangible, except for perhaps the memory of the love they had for their pets.
