Y va toujours y avoir
Richard Desjardins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Toujours y avoir du vent su'l Saint-Laurent.
Tu peux pas changer ça.
Chante-moi pas.

Mais 'vas-tu toujours y avoir
de l'eau dedans mon vin,
'vas-tu toujours y avoir
que'qu'chose en moins
quand tout c'que t'as c't'une tranche de pain?
Quand le vent souffle, moi j'sais
d'où c'est qu'çà vient.
Y en a qui ont tout' pis tout' les autres, y ont rien.

Change-moi ça.

Overall Meaning

In the first paragraph, the singer expresses his lack of knowledge about various things, such as the names of stars in the sky, rivers, and birds. He admits his ignorance and feels ashamed that he often doesn't know the right path to take in order to be content. Additionally, he reveals that he doesn't know the color of a twenty-dollar bill or even the name of his neighbor. Overall, he feels like he knows nothing.

In the second paragraph, the singer acknowledges that there are certain things that will always exist or happen, regardless of his lack of knowledge or control. He mentions that there will always be snow in January, forest fires during the blueberry season, and wind on the Saint Lawrence River. These natural occurrences cannot be changed or altered. The repetition of "y va toujours y avoir" emphasizes the inevitability and constancy of these events.

In contrast, in the third paragraph, the singer questions whether there will always be certain things that he has come to rely on. He wonders if there will always be water in his wine, meaning if there will always be compromises or dilution in his life. He also questions if there will always be something missing, implying that he feels unsatisfied or incomplete, even when all he has is a slice of bread. However, in the midst of uncertainty, he confidently claims to know where the wind comes from when it blows. This suggests that while there may be unanswered questions, the singer still has a sense of grounding or understanding in some aspects of life.

In the fourth and final paragraph, the singer points out the stark differences between those who have everything and those who have nothing. He emphasizes that some people have it all while others have nothing at all. This inequality is something he wants to see changed. By saying "change-moi ça" (change that for me), he calls for action, urging for a transformation or improvement in the existing social disparities. The lyric suggests a desire for a more equal and just society.
