Tant y a feme scet bon taire
Feme a un cuer par heritage
Qui ne peut estre en un estage
Or est sauvage, or est privee Ore veult paiz, or veult meslee
Femme engine en poi d'ure
Dount un[e] tere tout ploure
Que qui aime et croitt fole fame
Gaste son temps, pert corps et ame
Ore vous ai dit de lur vies
Fuoums de lur cumpaignies
Ore vous ai dit de lur vies
Fuoums de lur cumpaignies
Tant y a feme scet bon taire
Ore vous ai dit de lur vies
Fuoums de lur cumpaignies
The lyrics to Richard Einhorn's song The Jailers are in fact an old French proverb, which translates to "so many women know how to keep silent." The first two lines of the proverb are repeated throughout the song, suggesting that women have learned the art of keeping quiet, perhaps implying a theme of silence and oppression. The next few lines describe the nature of women and their hearts, suggesting that they are wild yet restrained, seeking both peace and conflict. Despite their complexity, women are also portrayed as fragile and easily hurt, with one raindrop causing their entire world to weep. The final two lines suggest that talking about women and their lives can cause trouble and lead to rumors and gossip.
