For his contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman, jointly with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965. He developed a widely used pictorial representation scheme for the mathematical expressions governing the behavior of subatomic particles, which later became known as Feynman diagrams. During his lifetime, Feynman became one of the best-known scientists in the world. In a 1999 poll of 130 leading physicists worldwide by the British journal Physics World he was ranked as one of the ten greatest physicists of all time.

He assisted in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II and became known to a wide public in the 1980s as a member of the Rogers Commission, the panel that investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. In addition to his work in theoretical physics, Feynman has been credited with pioneering the field of quantum computing, and introducing the concept of nanotechnology. He held the Richard Chace Tolman professorship in theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology.

Feynman was a keen popularizer of physics through both books and lectures, notably a 1959 talk on top-down nanotechnology called There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom, and the three-volume publication of his undergraduate lectures, The Feynman Lectures on Physics. Feynman also became known through his semi-autobiographical books Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! and What Do You Care What Other People Think? and books written about him, such as Tuva or Bust!.

@zerk I think it's very inspirational, and if inspirational is not exactly the word that describes it perfectly, it still eases me because it adresses worries that I have and it is just relaxing hearing someone (that you might be fascinated by) to be relaxed about those things. It's not rational, but relaxing though.

@jackpics I don't think he is doing either of the two things you think he is. He knows there are many things he doesn't know and that fact does not frighten him. He is trying to find out about the universe and if you could show him a method other than science that would get those answers and you could demonstrate that that other method weas reliable I am sure he would use it.

I'm a Christian but there is a lot to admire in this man's agnosticism. He had the spirit of a true poet as exemplified by the poem/equation he wrote after his first wife died. "I love my wife - my wife is dead." He loved her against all common sense and what was good for him, even after she had died. Takes a lot of courage to be a Richard Feynman.

Richard Feynman is a magnificent orator when it comes to quantum mechanics; primarily using metaphors and analogies instead of physics jargon, so to masses can comprehend the ambiguity, uncertainty and unpredictability of the quantum world. I've been reading up a-lot on quantum entanglement, the complementarity principle and the theory of uncertainty. The schrodinger's cat experiment is an intriguing analogy to explain the superposition paradox between particles.

What an amazing man !!! I wish the world had many more of him . These are the kinds of people who really should be in positions of power as the world would be a much better place just look at the remarkable changes to our way of life thanks to the work of great men and women of science who have accomplished so much in such a small period of time (only 200 years) compared to superstition and religion that kept our society stagnant for thousands of years.

I agree with Feynman, I'm quite comfortable having loads of unanswered questions. Questions are what keep me passionate and vigorous for life. I'm also at ease having no personal predetermined purpose or with nature itself having no inherent meaning. This simply means, to me, that I'm free to assign whatever meaning I wish to my own life, to other life and to nature at large. Because human life is, thus far, relatively very short, I prefer one that's authentic rather than delusional.

@Astra Salamun Alaykum, you are right because of your faith (iman). But don't be surprised if Mr. Feyman is a great man in God's eyes because what appears to be faithless to you is actually a very high level of wisdom. To say that this universe has no purpose is perhaps much closer to the worldview of the Quran. If God did everything with a reason, then this would be very boring and uninteresting. But God says He did not create everything in vain! So that means He created everything out of pure joy, fun, bliss, happiness (this is true creativity). Creativity implies purposeless fun. think about this.

Then alicia replied how you know that? Do you have any proof? And then she said that's same with love. Look my point is, not everything need proof. You have to use your own senses. When you study islam in depth you will be amaze by the process how God created this universe. I can share some books with you if you like.

I cant tell you all the admiration i feel for persons like this great scientist, in particular because Feynmay did science, show us the way, but he also had the capacity of reflection about science an the kwnoloedge it generates. I think we can say that he made science and philosophy, we can't distinguish from one or another easily.

To be honest when you view the world and the Universe in the lens of reality then you realize that the purpose that you decide for yourself is really much more than what could be placed upon you by some supernatural being. To know that it is my species and my own doing that makes me believe and do the good I do and seek out more knowledge and understanding instead of a divine makes me feel so much more content than any other outside make believe story ever could.

I studied classical lit and philosophy in graduate school. And I went into it seeking answers. By the time I was finished, I'd realized that -- though now equipped with some of the most important and complex insights of the Western Canon -- I still had so many more questions. And that, it turned out, was okay. The desire to pursue knowledge is inescapable, fortunately. But the full acquisition of it is destined to elude us. We are designed to be uncertain. And that's okay. I think that's exactly what Feynman is saying here, and I'm relieved to hear him confirm it.

Very true. I look out for docos on SBS every now and then but mainly stick to Youtube with FFreeThinker and the like. Recently watching these sort of things have taken a backseat to study, but one can never have too much Feynman or Sagan, esp. studying Physics.

I love this! This is a nice articulation of how I feel when people propose that theoretical vacuums should be filled even if the means are illegitimate..
I just don't see the point in lying to ourselves like that.. Ofcourse the phenomenon is explainable, but such realities are more frightening to me than any lack of explanation could ever be, for me ofcourse. It seems to me that this mindset stops us from wondering.. And thus that it stops us from pursuing legitimate discovery, to whatever the degree of our potential to do so in whatever area and within whatever period of time it might be! I do not blame people who are afraid of change in our understanding, but I love it when someone comes along who isn't, and makes his mark on the world for the sake of SCIENCE!
