I'm Your Man
Richard Hell / The Voidoids Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm your man (I'm your man)
I'm your man (I'm your man)
It's so good that you can get it from my hand
I'm your man (I'm your man)

I'm your man (I'm your man)
I'm your man (I'm your man)
It's so good that this way hey
I'm your man (I'm your man), yes I am baby!

You've know them since age ten
What men can do babe
What they did for themselves
I'll do for you
It's so good that
Oh no, yeah
I'm your man (I'm your man)
I'm your man I'm your man I'm your man babe

You say the time, I can't wait
The place and the time and the date
Just tell me when, I can't wait
'Cause baby, oh no

If I seem unromantic
You're glad that I do babe
What you say to me proves I'm
More romantic than you
It's so good that
You're so glad that
I'm your man (I'm your man)
Yes I am, baby

I'm your man (I'm your man)
I'm your man (I'm your man)
It's so good that uh huh, yeah
I'm your man (I'm your man)

You say the time, oh babe you're on
I will serve you plates containing light, it's dawn
Retaining face and form my fingers linger on
'Cause baby oh, oh, oh, oh, oh no!

We'll talk about me babe, whaddaya see?
Before you talk I'm gonna get down on my knees

It's so good that you can get it from my hand
I'm your man, baby, I'm your man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I'm Your Man" by Richard Hell and the Voidoids seem to be about a man who is declaring himself as the perfect partner for someone. He repeats the phrase "I'm your man" throughout the song, emphasizing his availability and devotion to his beloved. He recognizes that he may not be the most romantic person, but he offers himself as someone who can provide what his partner needs. The line "You say the time, I can't wait" implies a willingness to be available whenever his partner requires.

The line "What they did for themselves, I'll do for you" suggests that the man is willing to put in the same effort and energy he previously directed towards his own pursuits, to make his partner happy. The repetition of the phrase "It's so good that" could be a reference to the satisfaction the singer feels in being able to provide for his partner.

The song's overall message seems to convey a willingness to put the needs of the partner above one's own desires. It speaks of a selfless love, a readiness to be there for the partner whenever they need, and a willingness to go above and beyond in making them happy.

@@martwwa Absurd.

So Richard isn't 'like' Television? Even though he was IN the band when I first saw them?

Everything you've learned about Verlaine (RIP) & Co. AFTER the fact in the intervening decades doesn't change the fact that Hell's sensibilities were sufficiently alike to form the band with Tom in the first place.

In fact, Richard has said on countless occasions that the real parting of the ways came with Tom's growing cerebral obsession with studio craft - ie a vision of the band as this entity with these interlocking parts. Not so much their obviously shared affection for caterwauling vocals, guitar dissonance and the sense of continual reinvention onstage that came with their arrival in NYC

Whereas the times that I had the good fortune to catch Richard live?

'Let's just say that 'cerebral' would not be the first word that would come to me if asked to describe his stage presence.

Quine’s guitar solo is one of my favorites. Orginal and unexpected - adds to the song without showing off. Never get tired of hearing it played.
