Christmas Spirit
Richard Marx (Holiday) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't have to check it twice
I'm gonna have to count of St. Nick
Maybe he can make it right
I know but I'll try anything
And miracles have happened
And I think I hear those sleigh bells ring
I gotta get the Christmas spirit
I can't get anywhere near it
But I'm here hoping desperately
I'll do it up with all the trimmings
Christmas tree and carols singing
Anything to bring my baby back to me
All I want's a happy ending
Waiting there when I get home
I don't want to wind up spending
Another winter all alone
I hope it's not too much to ask
I'm sure you must be busy
So I'll try to end this story fast
Oh oh
I gotta get the Christmas spirit
I can't get anywhere near it
But I'm here hoping desperately
I'll do it up with all the trimmings
Christmas tree and carols singing
Anything to bring my baby back to me
I gotta get the Christmas spirit
I can't get anywhere near it
But I'm here hoping desperately
I'll do it up with all the trimmings
Christmas tree and carols singing
Anything to bring my baby back to me
Santa bring my baby back
Santa bring my baby back
Santa bring my baby back to me
Santa bring my baby back
Santa bring my baby back
Santa bring my baby back to me
In the song "Christmas Spirit," Richard Marx sings about wanting to reconnect with someone special during the holiday season. This person is his "baby," and he's hoping that Santa Claus can bring her back to him as his only desired gift. Marx is feeling the pressure of time and is pleading with St. Nick to make a miracle happen, even though he knows it might be a long shot.
The lyrics indicate that Marx is lonely during the holidays and is missing his significant other. He hopes to bring his loved one back by doing up the holiday season with all the trimmings, including a Christmas tree and carols. Marx is searching for the Christmas spirit that has eluded him, hoping to find it in the holiday traditions he observes.
The song's message is one of hope and longing, highlighting the power of love and how it can make the season brighter. It's a poignant reminder that the most important gift is often the love of those closest to us.

I just don't understand why this Christmas song is not a huge hit. It is by far one of the best original songs I have heard in many years. If this song came out 25 years ago it would have been very huge.

Good song
@joshuaecht
It feels like a Chicago/Journey/Diane Warren composition, so if it came out in '88-90, it definitely would have. It reminds me of "All Alone on Christmas" by Darlene Love. One song that came out later also has a similar feel--"Underneath the Tree" by Kelly Clarkson. Big '60s-'70s sound.

Richard or his management should really push this in the UK, especially now any songs Richard is now releasing are getting airplay..
