Richard had some fun with his unorthodox aural stylings when he spent two and a half years as the touring guitarist in Nine Inch Nails. His only recorded contribution--a droning guitar sound--can be heard at the end of "Sanctified" on Pretty Hate Machine. Due to the fact that Trent Reznor would not allow him any creative input or musical contributions, he chose to leave the band during the recording of The Downward Spiral in 1993. Richard and Brian Liesegang were both former Nine Inch Nails members.
In 2002, Richard entered rehab for alcohol addiction. On November 11, upon completion of treatment, he released the following statement on his website:
"Hi this is Richard again, I'm alive and kicking! Rehab was the best thing that ever happened to me, my mind is clear, my body is fit and I feel great. Thank you for all your love and support, I definitely felt it over the last 45 days. I can't tell you how great I feel. Rehab has made me rethink everything in my life. Now that I'm not wasting time on getting fucked up, I'll be able to devote more energy toward creating my music. I'll tell you right now that I have big plans for Filter and many other new musical projects that I have going on in my life. I'm so proud of this band and what we've accomplished, even when I was fucked up, but now that I'm straight there's no telling what we can do. So I know this might sound like a cliché letter from rehab, but because I've never said it, it's not cliché to me. So thanks for being there and supporting me through this, I'll write again soon!" [1]
Richard is a younger brother of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The X-Files actor Robert Patrick.
On September 29, 2005 Richard announced the formation of a new band "Army of Anyone" with former members of Stone Temple Pilots. The debut album is slated to be released in August 2006.
AWAKENING
Richard Patrick Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It begins with the father of sin
I walk alone in the garden of stones
I turn into the monster within
Life is too long for me
Life is too wrong for me
'Cause there's something that
That I miss being human
I realize
That I miss being human
Nothing Times
I lose control as the story unfolds
I have been like a knife to bare skin
I walk alone like a king with no throne
I burn up from the monster within
Life is too long for me
Life is too wrong for me
'Cause there's something that
I realize
That I miss being human
I realize
That I miss being human
Nothing Times
I like hunting the pieces
I like hunting the pieces
I like hunting the pieces
'Cause I have come to need this
I like hunting the pieces
I like hunting the pieces
'Cause I have come to need this
Shell
'Cause there's something that
I realize
That I miss being human
'Cause there's something that
I realize
That I miss being human
I teach lies
That I miss being human
I teach lies
That I miss being human
I teach lies
The lyrics to Richard Patrick's song "Awakening" seem to speak to a struggle with one's own nature and the temptation of something darker within oneself. The opening lines suggest that the singer feels out of control and burdened by a history that has yet to be fully revealed. The reference to the father of sin could be a biblical reference to Adam or perhaps even Satan, further emphasizing the idea of temptation and the struggle between good and evil. The singer appears to be alone in his struggle, walking alone in a garden of stones, and eventually turning into the monster within.
The repetition of "Life is too long for me" and "Life is too wrong for me" speaks to a sense of hopelessness or emptiness that the singer is experiencing. He feels that something is missing, and this becomes more evident in the chorus when he sings "That I miss being human." It's unclear what specifically he misses about being human, but it could be interpreted as a desire to reconnect with his own humanity after feeling consumed by darkness. The song continues with images of losing control, feeling like a knife to bare skin, and burning up from the monster within.
The final lines of the song, "I teach lies That I miss being human," suggest that the singer has been deceiving himself and others about his true nature. He may have been presenting a false image of himself as someone in control, but in reality, he misses the vulnerability and imperfection of being human. Overall, the lyrics to "Awakening" speak to a universal struggle with identity and the desire to be true to oneself.
