He is the frontman for the band Filter. A guitar player since the age of nine, Richard Patrick names U2 and The Cure as primary musical influences. Specifically, it was the flood of sound and the inventive use of technology employed by those artists to which he was drawn.

Richard had some fun with his unorthodox aural stylings when he spent two and a half years as the touring guitarist in Nine Inch Nails. His only recorded contribution--a droning guitar sound--can be heard at the end of "Sanctified" on Pretty Hate Machine. Due to the fact that Trent Reznor would not allow him any creative input or musical contributions, he chose to leave the band during the recording of The Downward Spiral in 1993. Richard and Brian Liesegang were both former Nine Inch Nails members.

In 2002, Richard entered rehab for alcohol addiction. On November 11, upon completion of treatment, he released the following statement on his website:

"Hi this is Richard again, I'm alive and kicking! Rehab was the best thing that ever happened to me, my mind is clear, my body is fit and I feel great. Thank you for all your love and support, I definitely felt it over the last 45 days. I can't tell you how great I feel. Rehab has made me rethink everything in my life. Now that I'm not wasting time on getting fucked up, I'll be able to devote more energy toward creating my music. I'll tell you right now that I have big plans for Filter and many other new musical projects that I have going on in my life. I'm so proud of this band and what we've accomplished, even when I was fucked up, but now that I'm straight there's no telling what we can do. So I know this might sound like a cliché letter from rehab, but because I've never said it, it's not cliché to me. So thanks for being there and supporting me through this, I'll write again soon!" Richard is a younger brother of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The X-Files actor Robert Patrick.

On September 29, 2005 Richard announced the formation of a new band "Army of Anyone" with former members of Stone Temple Pilots. The debut album is slated to be released in August 2006.

I ended here after I googled one of my favorite songs and videos, STP Wicked Garden and just read something about these guys. Evidently the lead singer was a studio musician for NIN and started his own band from there and was tired of 600 a week. I'm curious to here more. I remember this song being on the radio a long long long time ago. Everything but the vocals makes me think of PP for some reason...probably the percussion and sound of the early 2000's.

It took my about 6 years to find this song .. I just came across some reel on Instagram and it had it. I can’t believe it … I tried singing the chorus for my wife and I wasn’t even close to the words. But I had the harmony sound of it down.

My dad told me the story of what this song meant to him, my dad had never met his biological father until 2006, I was born in 1999 right after this song came out. When my parents drove home with me for the first time, this song was playing on the radio and my dad had never heard it yet. While this song was playing he was thinking about how his father would be feeling about being a grandpa and then the lyrics “Hey dad, what do you think about your son now?” played. He said he got goosebumps and started to cry, a mixture of joy and sadness of not knowing how his dad would feel about him, would he be proud? Happy? Supportive of his own boy having his first child? He said he’ll never forget that moment until he’s dead and gone. That story always struck home to me and made me think that maybe some things, even music, are meant for certain moments in time, like that moment right there. Thank you Filter for making a beautiful and soul warming song for us all to forever remember.

The first concert I ever went to was in my senior year of high school, back in 1999. I saw Filter, 311, Foo Fighters, Beck, Staind, and Bush. I've been to plenty of incredible shows in the 24 years since, but nothing has even come close to that first one, it still blows my mind how EPIC that shit was!!! Literally the stuff of legend. I feel old as hell saying it, but kids now will never be able to fully understand the pure magic of music back in the 90s/early 00s. I can so relate to what you said! I dreamed of becoming a radio DJ when I was in my late teens, and I would set up at night, like you, and dream about all the stations I could jock at. I would listen to my songs and just let my imagination run wild about how famous and successful I would become!!! At night in the 🏜 desert, I could pick up a station in Oklahoma City, and, years later, I ended up working there!! Yes, I imagined it and it happened!!! I'm retired now, 52 years old, and what a trip it's been!!!! But, how I wanna go back and be 16 again, and dream those dreams, and have all the wonderful things and beautiful ladies ahead of me instead of behind me....

I love this song, it reminds me of mtv, videos, & my sister & I going to see bands at clubs in 1990's. On Nov 24,2021 my sister died from diabetic/ covid-19 complications. We're 4 yrs apart, she was only 46 yrs old. I'll never have anyone else that loved music as much as her. Late 80's & 1990's music will live in heart always. My sister liked Filter, so did I. So I am an old fart who grew up loving music but ended up listening to talk radio all the time and this one escaped my radar. I am doing a big job (carpentry) and I like to go at night when none of the other trades are around in the interest of getting more done. Talk radio at night is nonsensical so I ended up buying an awesome Bluetooth speaker and subscribing to Spotify and picking out a whole bunch of songs that I like for a playlist and then I discovered the "enhance" feature and this song came on and I had never heard it before but I instantly fell in love with it. I can distinctly remember being up on a scissor lift, installing crown molding while this song is blaring and crushing it. Now it, along with several other Filter songs have been added to the world's most incredible playlist. You can copy and paste this entire post vis a vis Tonic.

If I were a club manager, I would want Filter, Tonic and a popular local band to fill the club.

I was in graduate school at the University of Florida when this came out. Whenever I hear it I can still smell the Gainesville pine trees and see them swaying in a late day Florida thunderstorm as I rode my bike across campus. My Mom is dying from alzheimers and dementia. This song runs through my head daily. She don't remember. She knows me but not how. It will most likely hit me in a dozen or so years. This song is bittersweet to me. This takes me back to the times with me and my friends drunk and feeling like we could conquer the world. Those nights were ours. We felt like kings and queens. I was part of lighting crew on this video. 2 nights of shooting on the back lot of of Universal, and the Olympic pool at the LA Coliseum. I've shot a lot of videos, and hearing the song over and over can get old real quick. Not this song though, I loved hearing it every time for two straight days. The guys in filter were totally cool, one of the band members gave me a CD and a t-shirt which I wore on the second night of shooting. Everybody asked me where I got the shirt, I told them I got it from the band lol. They were all jealous. Anyways great song, great band, great video. It was a privilege to work on it.

@Brian Carpenter It was inspired by the composer having a drunk episode. I think the crafting of the lyrics though has a wider area for interpretation. Even Richard Patrick admitted that each time he sings some of the lyrics they have a different meaning to him.
