Richard Sanderson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I didn't realize
That my life would change forever
Saw you standing there
I didn't know I cared
There was something special in the air
Dreams are my reality
Illusions are a common thing
I try to live in dreams
It seems as if it's meant to be
Dreams are my reality
A different kind of reality
I dream of loving in the night
And loving seems alright
Although it's only fantasy
If you do exist
Honey, don't resist
Show me a new way of loving
Tell me that it's true
Show me what to do
I feel something special about you
Dreams are my reality
The only kind of reality
Maybe my foolishness has past
And maybe now at last
I'll see how the real thing can be
Dreams are my reality
A wonderous world where I like to be
I dream of holding you all night
And holding you seems right
Perhaps that's my reality
Met you by surprise
I didn't realize
That my life would change forever
Tell me that it's true
Feelings that are new
I feel something special about you
Dreams are my reality
A wonderous world where I like to be
Illusions are a common thing
I try to live in dreams
Although it's only fantasy
Dreams are my reality
I like to dream of you close to me
I dream of loving in the night
And loving you seems right
Perhaps that's my reality
The song "Reality" by Richard Sanderson recounts a chance meeting of two individuals and the transformative nature of love. The opening lines, "Met you by surprise, I didn't realize, that my life would change forever" allude to the power of unexpected love to fundamentally alter one's life. The singer discovers a newfound attraction while simply standing beside their love interest, and despite initial uncertainty ("I didn't know I cared"), they soon become enamored with the person.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of dreams and fantasy in the singer's understanding of love. They refer to dreams as their "reality" and find comfort in the idea of an alternate, idealized world where love and "loving in the night" are possible. The singer is hesitant to acknowledge that their feelings may be illusory, but the phrase "although it's only fantasy" suggests a recognition of the divide between their dreams and their current reality.
The second verse of the song presents the singer's desire for the relationship to be real ("Maybe my foolishness has passed / And maybe now at last / I'll see how the real thing can be"). They plead with their love interest to "show me a new way of loving" and "tell me that it's true," indicating a willingness to pursue a real relationship if given the chance. The final repetition of the chorus reinforces the importance of dreams but ends on a note of ambiguity; it remains unclear whether the singer's reframing of love as a fantasy indicates a penchant for escapism or a yearning for something more idealized.

I really miss this type of 'old' music, it's very melodic, heartwarming, and also with beautiful lyrics. It's just really sad that those things are missing in today's music...
