Don't Tell Me
Richard Simmons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't tell me her eyes are bright as diamonds
Don't tell me her lips are sweet as wine
Her smile thrills you so and I guess I ought to know

Your new love is an old love of mine
Don't tell me how she snuggles closer and laugs at every silly little line
I guess I ought to know you see I love her so your new love is a lost love of mine
Don't tell me she's sweet as sugar candy don't tell me she's everything that's fine
Don't you realize to me it's no surprice your new love is an old love of mine

Don't tell me she'll wear a veil of white don't tell me it's your name now she'll sign
Your new bride to be meant everything to me your new love is a lost love of mine

Overall Meaning

In Richard Simmons’s song Don’t Tell Me, the singer is pleading with someone not to tell him about their new love interest. Through the first few lines, he acknowledges that he already knows what the person is going to say about their new love. He tells them not to tell him her eyes are bright as diamonds, her lips are sweet as wine, or that her smile thrills them. The reason why he doesn’t want to hear about this new love interest is because it happens to be an old love of his.

Through the song, the singer is acknowledging that he still loves this woman and hearing about her new relationship will only cause him pain. He doesn’t want to hear about how she snuggles up to this new person or how she laughs at their jokes. He already knows how great she is and it’s too painful for him to hear about. He reminds the person that she’s sweet as sugar candy, but it’s not a surprise to him since she was an old love of his.

The chorus continues with the singer pleading with the person not to tell him anything else about this new love. He doesn’t want to hear that she’ll wear a white veil or that she’ll be signing her new last name. To him, she meant everything and her new love is a lost love of his. Through this song, the singer captures the pain and hurt of watching someone you love move on and find new love.

Overall, Richard Simmons’s Don’t Tell Me is a beautiful song that speaks to the heartbreak of lost love. It’s easy to connect with the emotion and understand the pain that the singer is feeling.

My mother borrowed that album on cassette years ago back in 1985 when I was a kid. Myself, my mother and my sister used to work out with Richard Simmons with this album. Rest in peace mom. By the way, I do remember this song. Oh! Richard Simmons has a wonderful singing voice as well on the album.
