The recordings made by H.V.Karajan when he was director of the Vienna Opera (between 1956 and 1964) are among his most successful. This interpretation of Richard Strauss' emblematic work is a fine example. It must be admitted that this opening, the sunrise on the world, is impressive and sets the tone of this cosmic music, with its divine sparkle. All the sumptuousness of the sound of the Vienna Philharmonic is here at its peak led by a conductor who has the sense of implementation of the orchestral architecture into the smallest details. This new mastering gives more brilliance to this timeless testimony of the LP. Click to activate the English subtitles for the presentation (00:00-03:17)

4:09 That's one of the Most Sublime moments in the music history
Thank you Strauss and Karajan for this music MASTERPIECE!

@maglinantmesothelioma

Karajan gave the standard for Richard Strauss music interpretation. Just as Horowitz to Scriabin and Casals to Bach Cello Suites.

My understanding is that this is the actual recording Kubrick used for, you know.., but when they released the music from the film on LP, Decca didn't want to be associated with such petty releases, so they used Bohm's BPO recording (which really has its moments actually). Upon hearing this, Karajan was furious, really furious, so he refused to ever work with Decca again. This is a real shame because I always found that you need at $100, 000.00 stereo for DGG to sound clear, whereas those of us with Champagne tastes on a beer budget are stuck listening to the tinny crap sold at Best Buy, etc., etc. Thus leading to my point, that being, Decca had clearer sound than DGG, at least going by Solti's recordings anyway. Mic's were closer to the basses, etc. and don't tell me that was all because K's sound was mush, that's bull. Won't listen to that.

What is incredible is that the original recording was made with only 3 microphones. The famous "Decca Tree". Nowadays, there are almost as many microphones as there are musicians, which makes it possible to tweak the recordings even more, often to the detriment of the original interpretation.

Can’t say I agree. I listened to vinyl from the 50s on. There were may great recordings on all the top labels: Angel, Decca & RCA come to mind immediately. Columbia, too I had a very modest KLH speaker, AR amp and Thorens setup. DGG vinyl always has a quieter surface sound using Shute cartridges. RCA was excellent in that regard. We listened to 30s & 40s recording to get a feel for older performance styles. Believe me, the dynamics and sound bandwidth were awesomely poor by today’s standards. Nothing like today. We hunted for DGG vinyl to get the best sound consistently, as long as the platter presented the artists, orchestras and conductors that suited our tastes. Seems like a million years ago. Never would I imagine DG being put down. Times have been a changing

Rekindled my interest in classical music from the balcony of the Cinerama in Detroit. Sunrise has never been the same.
