It'll Be Me
Richard Thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well if you hear somebody knockin' on your door
if you see something crawlin' across the floor
baby it'll be me and i'll be lookin' for you
If you see a head peepin' from a crawdad hole
if you see somebody climbin' up a telephone pole
baby it'll be me and i'll be lookin' for you
[bridge]
gonna look on the mountains
and in the deep blue sea
gonna search all the forests
and look in every tree
Well if you feel something heavy on your fishin' hook
and you see a funny face in your comic book
baby it'll be me and i'll be lookin' for you
If you hear a voice callin' out in the night
if you see something hangin' from a lamppost bright
baby it'll be me and i'll be lookin' for you
If you see someone lookin' in all the cars
if you see a rocket ship on its way to mars
baby it'll be me and i'll be lookin' for you
[bridge]
gonna look in the cities
where the lights are blue
gonna search the countryside
and all the haystacks too
If you see a new face on your totem pole

if you find a lump in your sugar bowl
baby it'll be me and i'll be lookin' for you

At a show at the Culch (The Vancouver East Cultural Centre) decades ago, Thompson said the song was inspired by two British serial killers, who seemed to be inspiring each other through the newspapers. Now you know why it sounds so spooky.

Not sure what this song means, but I love the feeling of it.
