Java Jive
Richard Thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup (boy!)

I love java, sweet and hot
Whoops mr. moto, Im a coffee pot
Shoot the pot and Ill pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup

Oh slip me a slug from the wonderful mug
And Ill cut a rug just snug in a jug
A sliced up onion and a raw one
Draw one -
Waiter, waiter, percolator

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup

Boston bean (soy beans)
Green bean (cabbage and greens)
Im not keen about a bean
Unless it is a chili chili bean (boy!)

I love java sweet and hot
Whoops mr. moto Im a coffee pot (yeah)
Shoot me the pot and Ill pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup (yeah)

Slip me a slug of the wonderful mug
an Ill cut a rug just as snug in a jug
Drop a nickel in the pot joe
Takin it slow
Waiter, waiter, percolator

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me

Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, boy!

Overall Meaning

"Java Jive" is a playful and catchy ode to coffee and tea. The lyrics describe the singer's deep love for coffee and tea, and how the beverages seem to reciprocate the affection. The play on the word "bean" in the second verse points out the variety in coffee and how some bean types are favored over others. The nonsensical phrases ("whoops mr. moto, I'm a coffee pot," "slip me a slug from the wonderful mug") add to the lighthearted and whimsical tone of the song. Overall, "Java Jive" paints a carefree and fun picture of enjoying coffee and tea with friends.

This man has more music in his pinky than 90% of other musicians have in their entire catalog. Brilliant.

@succytash Best lives show I have ever seen were Richard Thompspn (multiple shows) and Stevie Wonder in 1976. Amazing musicians.

Average Chick

God bless!

Hard to believe RT has dropped down on the "100 Greatest Guitarist" list at Rolling Stone. Have these raters ever seen him live? Acoustic or electric, Richard is one of the greatest of all time.

Billiam

@john jarpe Totally know what you mean. Two guitar players that I know from the first note are RT and Mike Bloomfield, the two closest to my heart and soul. You do know that Richard did the soundtrack for "Grizzly Man" the film by Werner Herzog. It's perfect.
