In January 1998 Thompson toured with his son Teddy Thompson as the support act. Teddy joined his father each night to perform some duets. Several of these are included on the live album Celtschmerz - most notably "A Heart Needs A Home", which is associated with Teddy's mother Linda Thompson, and "Persuasion".
Tim Finn's version is on his 1993 album Before & After.
Persuasion

Time has fled, there's a constant battle
Running through my head
I don't know what to do 'cause I still believe
After all the foolish things you put me through
I could always make a start on something new
And I've always been a man who's open to
Blind romance, there'll be no half measures given half a chance
But we never learn, trusting in the fire while the cruel flame burns
And we need to rebuild what was never there
What got left behind
After all the foolish things that we've been through
I could always make a start on something new
And I'll always be a man who's open to
Persuasion
And it's written in my heart so that everybody can see it
And it's written in my soul, after all I still believe it
I still believe it, I still believe it
I still believe it, I still believe it
I don't know what to do 'cause I still believe
After all the foolish things you put me through
I could always make a start on something new
And I'll always be a man who's open to
Persuasion, persuasion, persuasion, persuasion
I still believe it
I still believe it persuasion
I still believe it, still believe it
I still believe it persuasion, persuasion
The opening lines of Richard Thompson's song Persuasion are an acknowledgment of the tempting allure of a different life. The singer has been through a lot with his partner, but he still believes they can rebuild what was never there. He recognizes the constant battle running through his head, but he doesn't know what to do. He is drawn to the possibility of starting something new, but he is also open to persuasion.
The second stanza is a reflection on blind romance and the fact that we often trust in the fire even when it burns us. The singer admits that they never learn and that they need to rebuild what was never there. There's a sense of pessimism and resignation in these lines, as if the singer doesn't have much hope for their relationship. However, the final stanza brings a glimmer of hope. The belief in something better is written in the singer's heart and soul, and he still believes it. He is open to persuasion, which suggests that he is not giving up on his relationship just yet.
Overall, Persuasion is a song about the challenges of relationships and the hope that they can be salvaged. The singer acknowledges that he and his partner have been through a lot, but he is still open to the possibility of starting anew. The song is a testament to the power of belief and the potential for change.

My brother and I were in the audience watching this, my brother worked for STV at the time and got us free tickets. I remember it clearly, we were both mesmerised by this beautiful song. My brother has recently passed away, so finding this small but precious moment really helped me. A fleeting glance of us at 2.24 sitting side by side as he always was in life with me. I’m so glad I found this.
