Have I Told You Lately
Rick Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have I told you lately that I love you could I tell you once again somehow
Have I told with all my heart and soul how I adore you well darling I'm telling you now
Have I told you lately when I'm sleeping every dream I dream is you somehow
Have I told why the nights are long when you're not with me
Well darling I'm telling you now
My heart would break in two if I should lose you I'm no good without you anyhow
Dear have I told you lately that I love you well darling I'm telling you now
Well darling I'm telling you now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Rick Nelson's song "Have I Told You Lately" speak of the need to constantly express love and affection to someone. The singer questions whether they have explicitly communicated their love, and if not, they long to do so once again. They express a deep devotion and adoration, emphasizing their sincerity by stating that they are speaking from the heart and soul. The singer contemplates the impact of the absence of their loved one, acknowledging that every dream they have is somehow connected to them. The nights feel longer and emptier when they are not around.

The lyrics convey a sense of urgency and vulnerability, as the singer reveals that losing their loved one would result in a broken heart. They admit that they are incomplete without this person, highlighting their dependence on their presence. Ultimately, the singer confirms their love in the present moment, assuring the recipient of their affection that they are loved.

Through its straightforward and heartfelt lyrics, "Have I Told You Lately" explores the importance of consistently expressing love and affirmation in a relationship. It shows that love needs to be made known, reiterated, and reinforced to maintain a deep connection and to ensure that the other person understands the depth of one's feelings.

This is the talented artist I first heard this song sung by. Loved it then and still do. His music lives on. Thanks for sharing.

On this day in 1957 {October 7th} "Be-Bop Baby" by Ricky Nelson entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #3 & spent 20 weeks on the Top 100 {Imperial Records released it as the B-side of the record}. But the record's A-side, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You", also charted, it reached #29 and stayed on the Top 100 for 9 weeks {the Four Preps sang back-up on this recording}. Mr. Nelson, born Eric Hilliard Nelson, passed away on December 31st, 1985 at the young age of 45.

I just love this song. Ricky was one of my first crushes when I was just a little girl. This is a beautiful song.

I LOVE this slower version of this song!

I agree with you Linda , but the very best version of this song that I've ever heard is by Eddie Cochran, and it's even slower than Ricky's . Check it out on Youtube.

How could I not know this great musician [though I heard about Elvis]..not until 2020? I was only five..when he died in 1985--and it is a sad thing to realize such! Now, I have a list [my favorites] of his great songs--It's Up to You, Travelin' Man, Lonesome Town, Hello Marylou, For You, Teenage Idol, Fools Rush In, Legacy, Believe What You Say, and this one of course...Have I Told You Lately That I Love You? Ricky Nelson sings without much effort [like Karen Capenter]...a beautiful voice, indeed!

In 1959 I recorded a 'demo' at Gene Breeden's home built studio in a converted garage in Visalia, CA.  I was 14 at the time and this was the song I recorded. Gene has gone on from there to own one of the most successful recording studios in Nashville, TN.

@lancesta01

have you got the recording?
