After dropping out of high school and joining the US Naval Reserve, he eventually went AWOL to concentrate on music. He fled to Canada in 1964 and started using the name Ricky Matthews. In Toronto, he led various incarnations of The Mynah Birds, some of which included Neil Young and Bruce Palmer (who would go on to form Buffalo Springfield) and Nick St. Nicholas (later of Steppenwolf). After scoring a deal with Motown, the band was swindled by their manager and the label discovered James was on the lam, and the band split up.
After serving time for desertion, James tried to rekindle the Mynah Birds, but eventually found a role as a writer and producer at Motown, using the name Terry Johnson on tunes for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers and The Spinners. He moved to California in 1969 and formed Salt 'n' Pepper (not to be confused with Salt-N-Pepa) and worked with a number of bands (Heaven and Earth, Great White Cane, and Stone City Band) before returning to Motown, where he developed the gritty funk sound that would bring him hits and notoriety. "Super Freak" in 1981, from the Street Songs album, was his biggest hit. During this period, he also helped launch the careers of R&B singer Teena Marie and the Mary Jane Girls as well as producing Eddie Murphy's hit, Party All the Time.
After remaining moderately successful through the 80s, his popularity waned in the 90s and he succumbed to drugs, having frequent run-ins with the law, one of which resulted in a prison term. After an unsuccessful comeback attempt in 1997 and suffering a stroke, James retired. He died in 2004 from heart failure with multiple contributing factors.
You And I

We fit together like a glove on hand, that's right
Don't you know that I would gladly take you anywhere you wanted to go?
You and me
We are as close as three-part harmony, wouldn't you agree?
And if by chance our romance ended it would surely be the end of me
Some people might say I'm infatuated (I don't care)
They'll never see or hear the things I do with you
So far as I'm concerned they all can go to
Well, alright, you squares, it's time you smoked
Fire up this funk and let's have a toke
It'll make you dance and some of everything
Everybody get high, sing
Bustin' out
Bustin' out
We're bustin' out of this L-Seven square
Freaks like you and I could never funk on there
We're bustin' out, everybody come along
We gon' dance on the funk and make love on the song
Sexy, sexy, sexy
Who do you
Girl, who do you belong to?
My point of view is
Girl, I think you're hot
If we talked
What words could I describe?
There's no dictionary book
To explain how you look
Girl, I think you're so
Sexy, sexy, sexy
Cold blooded
What more can I say?
Sexy, sexy, sexy
Cold blooded (freak)
Mary, I love you
Do it, baby
Doo doo doo doo
Mary Jane
Mary Jane
I'm in love with Mary Jane
She's my main thing
She makes me feel alright
She makes my heart sing
And when I'm feeling low
She comes as no surprise
Turns me on with her love
Takes me to paradise
Do you love me, Mary Jane?
Yeah, whoa-oh-oh
Do ya? Do ya? Do ya? Do ya? Do ya? Do ya?
Now do you think you love me, Mary Jane
Don't you play no games (woo)
Doo doo doo doo
Mary Jane
When I came home last night
You wouldn't make love to me
You went fast to sleep
You wouldn't even talk to me
You said I'm so crazy
Coming home intoxicated
I said, "Just wanna love you"
I just wanna love you, baby
Guess that's why I'm so elated
C'mon girl, give it to me, baby (give it to me, baby)
Give it to me, baby (give it to me, baby)
I betcha I'll make you hot 'til you've had enough
Give it to me
Give me that stuff that funk, that sweet that funky stuff (say what)
Give it to me
Give me that stuff that funk that sweet that funky stuff (say what)
Give it to me, give it to me
Give it to me, give it to me
Give me that stuff
That sweet, funky stuff
Yoh ho, ow ow ow
Girl, you're cute, you're sweet
You're such a sexy treat
You are the girl that turns me on
And when you're hot, you're hot
I love the stuff you've got
You are the kinky girl I write about in every song
Do do da do do da do do dah
Do do bop bop, baby
Do do dah do
Don't be so hard to get
Do do dah do do da do do dah
Do do bop bop, baby
Do do dah do
'Cause I will get you yet, hey
She's a very kinky girl
The kind you don't take home to mother
She will never let your spirits down
Once you get her off the street, oh girl
She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room it's the right time
She's never hard to please, oh no
That girl is pretty wild now (the girl's a super freak)
The kind of girl you read about (in new-wave magazines)
That girl is pretty kinky (the girl's a super freak)
I'd really love to taste her (every time we meet)
She's all right, she's all right
That girl's all right with me, yeah
Hey, hey, hey, hey
She's a super freak, super freak
Blow Danny!
Oh girl
Oh girl
Rick James's song "You and I" is a soulful love song with sensuous funk beats. The lyrics describe the perfect fit between two lovers who are inseparable and would go anywhere together. The song's opening lines evoke the idea of a perfect match, stating that the two lovers fit together like a glove on the hand. The chorus, which repeats the title phrase, emphasizes the closeness and intimacy shared by the two lovers. The verses detail how the lovers are perceived by those around them, with the singer admitting that some people think he's infatuated, but shutting down their criticism because they don't know what he shares with his partner. The song's funkiness is captured in the line "bustin' out of this L-Seven square," where the lovers seek a groovier environment to dance and make love.
