Awaken
Rick Wakeman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Master of images songs cast a light on you
Hark through dark ties that tunnel us out of sane existence
In challenge as direct as eyes see young stars assemble

Master of light, all pure chance
As exists cross divided in all encircling mode
Oh, closely guided plan awaken in our heart
Master of soul set to touch all impenetrable youth
Ask away that thought be contact with all that's clear
Be honest with yourself, there's no doubt

Master of time setting sail over all of our lands

And as we look forever closer
Shall we now bid farewell, farewell?

Effin' hilarious. On a more serious note, it's interesting to hear earlier rough vocal takes; they reveal that Anderson made a decisive improvement to the phrasing of "like the time I ran away" in the song's final version.

I first saw (some of) this footage in 1995 as part of the History of Rock 'n' Roll miniseries. At the time, I was pretty blown away by Rick's innate prowess and his courage in using all those keys and synths at once. It's now 22 years later, and I'm still blown away by the whole thing.

Best Yes song, of all time.

Such a study in contrasts: jokes around in ways that would make the devil blush, and yet plays like an angel.

Everything great about Rick wakeman in under 6 minutes. I'm guessing some nights he would be terribly fun to drink with.

@Ken Not Cat I probably would have partied with Rick and Chris half the time and meditated with Jon and Steve the other half, while Bill just looked on and shook his head in dismay...

@mark johnson ha yeah I mean we all gotta lay off at some point. He seemed to really enjoy for a few years. Really of all the Yes guys he and Chris would be the ones I would have wanted to hang with in the party years.

Indeed, unfortuately that was his second greatest skill, being terribly fun to drink with, Lol!!

Actually, I believe Mr. Wakeman swore off alcohol a LONG time ago, after being diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver, and stopped drinking old sober, as they say. I also read that Rick had produced and recorded 1 or 2 Christian Themed music. Yes, like all of us, he definitely has a fun, irreverent heart, but solemn, just the same?
