One of the greatest of all time. Was very sorry when he died in a plane crash on New Years eve in 1985. He never received the credit that was due him. R.I.P. Rick Nelson and thanks for all the great memories.

I am also a huge fan and totally recognize the greatness of James Burton but as most of Ricky's fan base at the time were teenage girls I'm sure he would have been as huge without James but I don't believe his music would have stood the test of time without him I am 54 and in my opinion it is James Burton that brought the musical integrity to the whole thing his solo's were brilliant and really kept Ricky's music from being filed away into the teen idol bin

@Joel Boone James had his first exposure as lead on the Dale Hawkins 1957 classic "Susie Q". He joined Rickyin November of 1957 but Joe Maphis was playing lead so Burton did rhythym guitar at first. He worked with Rickyuntil 1968. Elvis tried to hire him for his 1968 Come Back Tour but James declined because he was in so muchdemand but then agreed to join Elvis in late 1969 and stayed with Presley until his death. Check out Roy Orbison'sBlack and White Night Concert- Burton is the featured lead there too. Burton was also the leader of the House Bandfor the TV Show Shindig.
