Gervais achieved mainstream fame with his award-winning BBC2 television programme The Office, which he co-wrote and co-directed with long-time friend and collaborator Stephen Merchant. Besides writing and directing the show, Gervais played the lead role of David Brent.
In 2005, Gervais returned to BBC Television with his new sitcom, Extras.
He was one half of the pop duo, Seona Dancing, who had minor success in the early 80's.

The instruments were for morale, issuing orders etc, and the flags were rallying points. You wouldnt able to see anything on a battlefield due to the gunpowder smoke and often you would go temporarily deaf from the noise.
By the way I live in China and the spitting thing is very common among the old even though it is considered disgusting here also. I dont know if it is from the pollution, diet (oil), or just a cultural thing. I havent been to Hong Kong, Taiwan, or areas China colonised like Singapore and Malaysoa, or been around elderly Chinese outside China so not sure if it is a Chinese trait worldwide.
