Black Nite Crash
Ride Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the girls coughing, looking underfed
When they go to sleep, they dream of being dead
I saw you in the corner, with a butcher's knife
Your boyfriend running round, looking for a midwife

Everyone's got the same disease, it's alright
Everybody lives down on their knees, it's alright
Bumped into a hunchback abuser
Said he made a million working on a cruiser
Do what he want and he don't get caught
He's looking at the moon but I'm an astronaut

Everyone looks when they see a crash, it's alright
Everybody needs just a little cash, it's alright

Evening daybreak, switchblade stomach ache
Gonna meet a man with a rattlesnake handshake

Walk around like I'm looking for an upgrade
Slipping through town like a penny in the arcade

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ride's song "Black Nite Crash" depict a haunting and ominous landscape that suggests something of a post-apocalyptic world. The opening lines paint a bleak picture of girls who are malnourished, dreaming of death. The singer then witnesses someone with a butcher's knife and a frantic boyfriend running around looking for a midwife. The lines that follow suggest a sense of resignation, that everyone is infected with the same disease and is living on their knees.

The second verse is equally as foreboding, describing a chance encounter with a hunchback abuser who brags about his ill-gotten gains. The lines suggest that he is untouchable, looking at the moon while the singer is an astronaut, presumably isolated and drifting. The chorus provides a counterpoint to the darker verses, implying that everyone is drawn to a crash or needs cash, suggesting either a darker, more sinister side to humanity or a desire to survive at all costs.

Overall, the lyrics to "Black Nite Crash" are an enigmatic and evocative snapshot of a world that is struggling and damaged, full of people who are desperate to survive or thrive in some way, shape or form.

As a Ride devotee from their first EP, I have loved their journey thru the 90s. The reverb soaked wall of shoe gazing psychedelic sound with the best drummer on earth to the 60s embracing Carnival of Light to Tarantula. A band stripped down and using their spines and feel more melody. I listen to this album only second to “Nowhere”. That’s how I judge an album...by how often I play it. I love “Tarantula” and will not apologize for it...heh.

I'm a Ride devotee also and for me their music right now (2024) sound a lot like New Order and I'm not excited where their music is, I get it. This album was their final masterpiece imo. RIDE FOREVER.

I remember the "WTF?" response this song + album provoked at the time, but great songs will always outlive mere fashions and trends..

@jb8280

Yeah, their love of New Order and such is ever present these days. While always good with songs, the latest albums feel like nothing much to say other than getting to play out their New Order boyhood fantasy…heh. If it was darker and more Joy Division sounding…perhaps I would have a better outlook…:)

One of my favourite songs.

ギターが主役。どこか垢抜けている。ボーカルもイヤミがなくてスマート。個人の感想です。
