Deep Inside My Pocket
Ride Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You think you know me inside out
Think you know what I'm all about
Here comes a slightly rude surprise

While you were tryin' to control
'N' trying to grab my soul
I blinked and saw right through ya
I'm spellin' out all of my rules
Keepin' charge of all my tools
I'm decidin' who gets inside

When someone cares, it's nice to know
'Til that care turns to runnin' the show
And then I'll turn on ya

There is a secret place
It's deep inside my pocket
Never try tellin' me
Who fits inside my pocket

I know what I have to find
And I gotta whole lot of time
Before I really reach my prize

Gotta desire to mess around
It'd be cool just to fool around
Maybe we'll mess together

There is a secret place
It's deep inside my pocket

Never try tellin' me
Who fits inside my pocket

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ride's song "Deep Inside My Pocket" speak to the importance of maintaining one's autonomy and independence. The first verse sets the stage for the song's theme, with the singer asserting that they are not easily understood or controlled. The second verse continues this trend, with the singer emphasizing that they alone will decide who gets to "get inside" and be a part of their life. However, the chorus adds a layer of complexity to this narrative, with the repeated refrain "there is a secret place, it's deep inside my pocket." This line suggests that even as the singer asserts their independence, they also have a deep desire for connection and intimacy with someone else, but will only allow someone into this "secret place" on their own terms.

The verse that follows further develops this idea, with the singer expressing a desire to "mess around" and "fool around" while keeping their own goals and desires at the forefront. Throughout the song, there is a sense of tension between wanting to be close to someone else and maintain one's own sense of self. The final lines of the chorus, "never try telling me who fits inside my pocket," bring the song to a close while underscoring the importance of autonomy and agency in one's own life.

Overall, "Deep Inside My Pocket" speaks to the universal human desire for connection and intimacy while maintaining one's independence and sense of self.

The lead singer of The Seahorses had a fantastic voice! Problem is you compare them to The Stone Roses which isn't really fair, John Squires solo album standout track is Life Changes Everything, Ian Brown has had some brilliant solo projects, the unreal
