During the competition, Rik was told by Simon Cowell that he was "too much of a twat to be an idol". He made it into the final ten of the show but was forced to pull out due to a throat infection and was replaced by Darius Danesh. Following the show, Rik signed a one-album contract with EMI worth £400,000, with his first single being a cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You".

Although Rik initially won public admiration on Pop Idol, this quickly evaporated[citation needed]. He has since taken part in Celebrity Fit Club and Back To Reality.

After his contract with EMI finished, Rik formed his own band to take his music out on the road. Rik then signed an album deal with Red Admiral Records.

In October 2004 it was reported in the media that the Devon concert of Rik and his band's UK tour was cancelled because only two tickets were sold.

Rik's obesity has made him a prime target for critics, including the likes of Simon Cowell, and Jade Goody, who repeatedly dissed Rik on Back to Reality. His weight has also led to him being the butt of a lot of "fat" jokes.

His second album Innocence was released in September 2005. The band was re-named Rik Waller's Mighty Soul Band, but has been renamed yet again; the band is now known as Rik Waller's Unfinished Business (as reported on Rik's official website).

On February 28, Waller appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks not as a guest but as part of the identity parade for forgotten artists.

Sort of met Paul Whitehouse a while back, I work in a shopping center and suddenly heard a voice behind me asking me If I could help find a car in our car park, turning around as done many times before to help customers, it was Paul, with his wife and daughter, in shock, and sort of hyperventilating (been a bit of a fan for years) had a little conversation whilst helping, you know, sort of "oh what brings you to this neck of the woods", i think he said something like shopping, lol a bit obvious, but got him to his car and he thanked me then his little girl said bye as I was walking away, I looked back he was holding her hand and was encouraging her to wave, thoroughly bloody nice bloke, did not ask for selfie or autograph as, did not want to intrude on his privacy.

I can imagine Paul being very down to earth in real life, his characters often have a loveable side to them. I'm with you on how to be with famous people- treat them as anyone else, it's too tiring to expect them to be "always on"- they're entitled to a life outside of celebrity. Though this is sometimes easier said than done if you're a bit awestruck!

Paul is not just a great comedian but one of the finest actors who's ever lived. His performance as Rowley Birken QC reminiscing over his long lost love brought me to tears instantly the first time I saw it and the effect hasn't worn off since. Paul achieves such pathos with little more than looks and gestures, barely a comprehensible word but you know Rowley is suffering agonies. The great Johnny Depp, one of the finest actors of our generation said he thought Paul was the greatest actor who's ever lived and asked if he could have a guest slot on the Fast Show because he admires Paul so much. Paul first really came to light on the first Harry Enfield series where he played supporting characters and came across as maybe a bit of a side kick. As time moved on he proved he was every bit the equal of Harry, so that the Harry Enfield show became Harry and Paul. I draw some comparisons with Bob Mortimer, who started out playing characters on Vic Reeves Big Night Out, then subsequent series became Reeves and Mortimer.

I am, and have been since I first heard him, a massive Bowie fan and I was surprised that he was producing music for almost 10 years before the success of Space Oddity. He was also 1 of the great collaborators of music as well having worked with some of music's most legendary artists and the guy could come up with a song just using finger clicks (like on soul love, and in collaboration with Freddie Mercury on Under pressure)and gave Iggy Pop the most sacred thing you can give everyone, a direction to go and a helping hand. Legendary doesn't even come close to describing how good he was, and I am sure that Paul would agree.

It is surprising to realise that incredibly famous people, like Bowie, watch and enjoy the same things as us ordinary mortals do!
I can't imagine David Bowie, or the queen, sitiing down on a sofa with their nearest and dearest to watch The Fast Show, or Coronation Street etc.
