I WILL ALWAVS LOVE YOU
Rik Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I should stay
Well, I would only be in your way
And so I'll go, but yet I know
That I'll think of you each step of my way
And I will always love you
I will always love you
Bitter-sweet memories
That's all I have, and all I'm taking with me
Good-bye, oh, please don't cry
Cause we both know that I'm not
What you need

I will always love you
I will always love you

And I hope life, will treat you kind
And I hope that you have all
That you ever dreamed of
Oh, I do wish you joy
And I wish you happiness
But above all this
I wish you love
I love you, I will always love

I, I will always, always love you
I will always love you

I will always love you
I will always love you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rik Waller's "I Will Always Love You" are a heartfelt goodbye from a lover who has come to the realization that they need to leave the relationship. The opening lines, "If I should stay, well, I would only be in your way," sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer understands that they are not what their lover needs and that leaving is the best option. However, even in leaving, the singer acknowledges that they will carry memories of their lover with them and will always love them.

The song's chorus, "I will always love you," is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the depth and sincerity of the singer's love. This love is not conditional on being together or being a part of each other's lives. The singer wishes only for their lover's happiness and success in life, even after they have gone their separate ways.

The bittersweet nature of the song is underscored in the line, "Bitter-sweet memories, that's all I have, and all I'm taking with me." This line captures the painful reality of leaving someone you once loved deeply, and how memories of that person can linger long after the relationship is over.

Overall, "I Will Always Love You" is a poignant and emotional farewell from a lover who truly cares for their partner's well-being even after their relationship has ended.

Now that she's gone, physically, I have a difficult time listening to this gem. When I first heard it as a little girl, I was so fascinated by certain things she did, vocally. Just rewinding it over and over again making sure that I get every single part. Singing the way she did, specifically, in her prime is extremely rare. She was technical, but effortless. Producers used to make her do the same part over and over again because they didn't want her to leave the session. That's how excellent she was. She was a rare and unique talent. Love her and miss her dearly.

This song was first released in 1974 when Dolly Parton wrote and performed it. It was about her professional breakup with Porter Wagoner who had first hired her to be on his show - when she decided to leave she knew he would be upset so she wrote this and sang it to him.
