During the competition, Rik was told by Simon Cowell that he was "too much of a twat to be an idol". He made it into the final ten of the show but was forced to pull out due to a throat infection and was replaced by Darius Danesh. Following the show, Rik signed a one-album contract with EMI worth £400,000, with his first single being a cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You".

Although Rik initially won public admiration on Pop Idol, this quickly evaporated[citation needed]. He has since taken part in Celebrity Fit Club and Back To Reality.

After his contract with EMI finished, Rik formed his own band to take his music out on the road. Rik then signed an album deal with Red Admiral Records.

In October 2004 it was reported in the media that the Devon concert of Rik and his band's UK tour was cancelled because only two tickets were sold.

Rik's obesity has made him a prime target for critics, including the likes of Simon Cowell, and Jade Goody, who repeatedly dissed Rik on Back to Reality. His weight has also led to him being the butt of a lot of "fat" jokes.

His second album Innocence was released in September 2005. The band was re-named Rik Waller's Mighty Soul Band, but has been renamed yet again; the band is now known as Rik Waller's Unfinished Business (as reported on Rik's official website).

On February 28, Waller appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks not as a guest but as part of the identity parade for forgotten artists.

I worked on a film with him . And the experience was not good .
I was asked if I could learn a script for a project, because someone else had dropped out before filming . So I agreed to give it a shot .
I had approx two weeks to learn my part for this mid length film . It was micro budget , horror film of sorts . It wasn’t until the first day that I met Rick .
He was polite enough , but shockingly overweight . He turned up in a full length black leather jacket and struggled to get up stairs without sweating .
The budget was pretty much nothing , and the script wasn’t going to win any awards . But it was nice to be working with a filmmaker putting his money where his mouth was.

However when it was time to rehearse for the first set up , I found out that Rick didn’t know a single line , not one.

Bearing in mind I’d had the script two weeks. & Rick was the film makers friend . So he’d had the audacity to turn up for his friends project , without doing a stroke of work . Any respect I might have had for him , disappeared in that first day .
We struggled through days of him being fed lines , until I was so wound up , it was difficult to be civil to him .
He had an opportunity with his singing , to perhaps , maybe build an alternative life for himself. However his character is such that he could never sustain any sort of career in entertainment. He’s just a man of excuses I’m afraid . Which is a shame .

I don't really have a problem with big people, and there's no law which says that you have to be slim to sell albums - look at Adele. I don't hate Rik, I think he can definitely sing, I just hates how he refuses to help himself. I actually prefer men with some curves, but when you get as big as Rik you know you have a problem, because it's not healthy, and it's not clever. A year after Pop Idol, he was on some weight loss reality show, but he fought with the personal trainer and was caught eating junk food. Similarly, on The Trisha Show he comforted a young girl who was being bullied for her weight. He gave her a poster of himself and promised to lose weight with her. A year later, Rik claimed to have slimmed down, but I didn't believe him - he could have confirmed it properly by making an appearance on the show instead of speaking on the phone, and indeed just a few months later on C5's Back to Reality he was looking bigger than ever. The guy had plenty of opportunities to improve his life but didn't take proper advantage, and it's a shame because he did have a decent voice. I still think that most of the comments here are cruel, though. Yes, he's not the UK's most likeable person, but he's still a human being.

Totally agree, the music industry is fickle and they know that sex sells more records. Your are expected to look and sound your best.
