Chie Arai and Mana Yoshinaga play koto, sangen, and jushichi-gen, while Tomoca Nagasu plays biwa and shakuhachi. All three perform vocals.
According to the band's website, the name Rin' comes from the English word 'ring', the Japanese word Wa (和, meaning both 'ring' and 'Japanese-style'), and from the trio's hope to create a 'ring', or circle, of music.
Since their debut, the band has performed in many venues around the world, and have released four singles and several albums. A number of their songs have been used as themes for anime and movies, most notable is Fuhen used in the Samurai 7 anime.
Their chief international album, Inland Sea, was released worldwide: in Europe and the United States on April 25, 2006 and in Japan on August 30, 2006, featuring guest performances by Leigh Nash and Lisa Loeb.

In Rin's song Eternal, the singer is questioning the existence of love that illuminates the town and wonders where it can be found. Even the hope for today and tomorrow's future is desperate and lacking. The Merry-Go-Round that nobody rides continues to spin, and the singer wonders how long it has been turning. The paradise that has been disintegrated and vanished has been taken away from the remaining ones. If one dies halfway on the journey, the singer hopes that they have not been taken away. The singer wishes that they never see the blue sky, and whether it would be a silly expectation to maintain.
Then, the song takes on the aspect of the singer's memories of the past, where once they weren't used to giving up their little dreams. The noise that they were tired of hearing and the right fruit that was nibbled in this contradictory world, the bitterness, and the pain that even those who laugh could understand. The singer acknowledges that even if they rot away here, they wish to communicate their voice once, and the pain that they feel now, which is full of scrapes and bruises, will still be soaked in gentleness. They know that it might not go together but what they want will not be forgiven, no matter who asks for it, and they understand that.
