Chosen Family
Rina Sawayama Lyrics

Where do I belong

Tell me your story and I'll tell you mine
I'm all ears, take your time, we've got all night
Show me the rivers crossed, the mountains scaled
Show me who made you walk all the way here

Ooh
Settle down, put your bags down
Ooh
You're alright now

We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing, yeah
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family

Hand me a pen and I'll rewrite the pain
When you're ready, we'll turn the page together
Open a bottle, it's time we celebrate
Who you were, who you are
We're one and the same, yeah, yeah

We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing, yeah
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family

I chose you
You chose me
I chose (chosen family)
I chose you
You chose me
We're alright now

We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same pain, yeah
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family

We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing, yeah
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family

We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing, yeah

You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family

Overall Meaning

Rina Sawayama’s song “Chosen Family” is an ode to the importance of creating and cherishing a support system of individuals outside of one’s biological family. The lyrics convey a sense of unconditional love and acceptance, symbolically expressed through the lines “We don't need to be related to relate. We don't need to share genes or a surname. You are, you are My chosen, chosen family”. The song highlights the idea that belongingness and identity are not strictly bound by blood relationships but rather the experiences and connections formed through shared pain, joy, and intimate moments.

The lyrics describe the idea of taking the time to listen and understand each other’s stories, regardless of how different they may seem. The lines “Tell me your story and I'll tell you mine” and “Show me who made you walk all the way here” imply a sense of empathy and support that one finds in the chosen family. The song emphasizes that this support can help heal past traumas and pain, as symbolized through the lines “Hand me a pen and I'll rewrite the pain, when you're ready we'll turn the page together”.

In essence, “Chosen Family” is an uplifting ballad that celebrates the beauty of human connection and the idea of finding love and joy in the individuals we choose to call family, even if they are not related by blood.

..i need to be honest right now. for someone that prides himself on pop culture I never knew this woman existed and randomly I came across this song. and I absolutely lost it.

her voice is something special. and the second Elton started singing, I lost it.

this woman is incredible. and Elton, you are the epitome of class and the epitome of a hard worker.

I've lost 15 loved ones and four short years and seven the last one and a half. two of my best friends are gone. my ex who was only 26 died of COVID. and my best friend here in Chicago was murdered down the block from me. no one understands and I am having the worst day of my life every single day of my life and very rarely will music hit me so hard.

this song is incredible. the lyrics scene so beautiful and simple but this is a perfect example of how you can have whatever lyrics you want in a song but these two together are a gift from God. I feel their love I feel their protection and I feel their experience. this woman is absolutely incredible and I cannot wait to hear more of her music. and Elton....you took my breath away. you absolutely took my breath away.

also I don't usually read comments but I did for some reason, and it's so good to see so many of you guys being kind because so many people in this world are not and I'm just here to let you all know that you all f**** rock, there's very few that can understand my pain and grief and this entire song and thread changed my day but perhaps it's going to last longer than that. I can't wait to listen to this over and over and I can't wait to go to my two best friends Graves and play them this song.

xoxoxo. be safe.💛
