Shine Silently
Ringo Starr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just another room, just another town
Same old crazy people, hangin' around
Still you shine silently
Strarin' down in space, comin' down alone
Feel like packin' all my bags, headin' home
Still you shine silently

Shine silently
I don't need no light, in the darkness
Shine silently
No I won't get lost while your love shines on me
Shines on me

People at the door, people on the phone
Same old story no time of my own
Still you shine, silently
Nothin' left to say, nothin' left to prove
When it's said and done there's nothin' left but you, babe
Shine silently

Shine silently
I don't need no light, in the darkness
Shine silently
No I won't get lost while your love shines on me
Shines on me

Shine silently
I don't need no light, in the darkness
Shine silently

No I won't get lost while your love shines on me
Shines on me

Overall Meaning

In Ringo Starr's song Shine Silently, the singer expresses his feelings of being stuck in a monotonous routine in a new town with the same old people. He is feeling alone and disconnected from his surroundings. Despite this, he finds comfort in the silent shining of his love. The lyrics convey a sense of hope and reassurance that he will not lose his way as long as the love and light of his partner continue to shine on him.

The repetition of "same old crazy people" emphasizes the monotony and predictability of his surroundings. He feels like leaving and going back home, but the reassurance he receives from his partner's silent shining gives him the strength to stay. The phrase "strarin' down in space, comin' down alone" showcases his feelings of isolation, which are countered by the shining of love that he feels.

Overall, the song is about finding hope and reassurance in the midst of a mundane routine. The shining silently of love provides a beacon of hope and a sense of stability amidst chaos and isolation.

Mark Swain

When will this man get the recognition he deserves?
Fabulous.

James Smith

Mark Swain For real. I have listened to this video countless times. People have walked into the room and asked, “who is that on guitar.” That’s Nils. Respect the man!

Gail Williams

So underrated! He's one of my favorites. Such a great guitarist!

Duff Gordon

+Mark Swain 30 years is my guess. I told the story that Mark Knopfler invited Nils as a guest on a big british stage. For the vast majority he was in a dark corner but finally Mark called him up.He got  15 seconds Mark. He flew over there and sure Mark Is great but Nils has a bunch of tricks to work his tones. I have learned what that means- that the host is scared and Nils is the Pinch hitter who hits 333 with power. Clapton also was invited on as he got 20 seconds. These are two gentlemen MK that are not going to embarrasses you.we all have to realize that the best of the best are staring at mortality. Ringo believed, Springsteen stole him and is jealous imo . It may be best that while MK is playing that Nils walks over and stays there and battles to the end. Look at Randy California bringing on 6 or so of the best to play watchtower. There is no one that I hear that can take on Gary Moore rip due to his massive hands and sense of tone, MK I was in HS when I heard Sultans and I knew music had changed. It's not who is "best" it's the different styles. Give Doug Gordon a try on Tangierband.  Nils I saw you in Georgetown 1974 -it was enough .

Damn, maybe the best live version i've seen him do of this. ONe of the most inspirational songs ever! ......."Don't let nobody keep you from your dreams"

I´ve heard quite a lot live versions of this song, but this one beats them all: so full of beauty, energy and delight it makes you cry tears of joy!!

I am so happy finding this on youtube! I've wanted this concert for so long, but couldn't find it on DVD, and since I'm from Norway I wasn't sure if the VHS could play on our VHS players. So happy! It's like a dream come true! haha. Nils is truely a fantastic artist, but sadly underrated.

This is one of the best live versions of this song that I've heard, even including the one he did with The Boss & Little Steven and The Max Weinberg Seven (which was pretty damn fine).

Bright ! My favorite guitarist when I was 17. Already ... The best version I ve heard. Simply magnificent !

I think Ringo must have encouraged him to shine literally at those shows. I know when I saw them in Vancouver Nils got a massive standing ovation and I don't think too many people knew what he was capable of.
