Absence
Rio Romeo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I leave tomorrow
Would you be alright
Would you be filled with sorrow
Would you put up a fight
How can I protect you
When I don’t feel alright

If I just vanished
Do you think you’d manage
Or would you disappear right beside me
Do you think you’re ready
When I go unsteady
Lover, please prepare for my absence

If I left the country
Would you search and search
Or would you give up easy
And find me in the dirt
Would I live forever
Or blend right into earth

If I just vanished
Do you think you’d manage
Or would you disappear right beside me
Do you think you’re ready
When I go unsteady
Lover, please prepare for my absence

Absence makes the heart grow stronger
Pray my baby will not squander
Everything to gain by my leaving
And if I can return the favor
Pray my baby always savors
Every moment we were both present

Cause if I just vanished
Do you think you’d manage
Or would you disappear right beside me
Do you think you’re ready

When I go unsteady
Lover, please prepare for my absence

Overall Meaning

In "Absence," Rio Romeo sings about the potential consequences of leaving a relationship, both physically and emotionally. He addresses his lover directly, asking if they would be able to handle his departure and how they would react if he were to disappear. The lyrics are introspective, reflective, and carry a sense of uncertainty, and the questions he poses create a haunting effect. Romeo contemplates if he's prepared to leave his loved one behind, as well as whether or not his departure would have a significant impact on his partner.

The repetition of the same lines throughout the song creates an eerie atmosphere, while his powerful voice adds to the emotional intensity of the track. Rio Romeo's lyrics are particularly thought-provoking, as they incorporate themes of vulnerability, love, and loss. The choruses highlight the central message of the song- the importance of preparing for a partner's absence and cherishing the time spent together.

Overall, "Absence" is a poignant yet stunning work that evokes a range of emotions. Rio Romeo's emotional range in his voice, coupled with his introspective lyrics, makes for a powerful and immersive listening experience.

This is such a beautiful remaster of this song, it still sounds painful and yet this version is more cathartic and healing, like you’ve become more empathetic and kind to yourself if that makes sense? I just really relate to this feeling, when you grown up and look back at yourself when you were at your worst and instead of criticizing yourself for your past mistakes, you learn to understand and comfort them because you know that’s what they really needed.

This song talked me out of suicide. It made me think about how much my friends and family actually love me and how it would hurt them if I was gone. I am forever in debt to you for saving my life, rio ❤ I’m so glad I’m still here today, danke!!!!
