@Jacob 🎶Thank you🎶 What's really pathetic is a lot of people haven't actually seen 'Sideways' they just picked up the idea (Merlot = garbage) from cultural osmosis in reaction to the film.
Similarly is the idea that Chianti is superior by default due to the reference in Silence of the Lambs. (When in reality there are some very dumpster Chianti's out there that aren't even salvageable for replacing a cooking Sherry. It's not even Thunderbird quality.)
As an individual that spent a good portion of time being a bit of a wine aficionado (with a penchant for reds), I *loathed* the trend of connoisseurs treating Merlot like it was an inherently bad wine. Therefore I was a peasant for enjoying it.
Cue the irony when I could not get anyone to consider muscadine wine from the local vineyards (unless I poured it and they had a glass without knowing what it was) then a few years later a huge surge in the wine community for "Moscato" - this 'recently discovered gem that is taking the appreciation of American wine to a whole new level' - it's muscadine. There is no difference. Moscato is made from muscadine grapes the process is identical. All they did was change the name and suddenly a garners respect and is gourmet.
TLDR: Ragging on Merlot (or those who enjoy it) is not only a really jerk move, but it also betrays that it's coming from a place of presumption bias as opposed to legitimate expertise and understanding of how to properly rate wine,
