Sicalyptico, her second album, to date and it is comprehensibly a timeless classic from start to finish. Nothing revolutionary for her but, this record incorporates a delicate sexy perspiration (Sicaliptico is synonymous with erotic in Spanish).
None of the 14 tracks are disappointing, there is some ultra-catchy international jet setting and bubblegum flair emulating The Bugaloos on “Believe”, wind chiming summery echoes on “Barefoot In The Park” (N. Hefti), stream acoustic delicacies as “Wailing Of The Willow” or “If” a la Astrud Gilberto, some jazzman's boulevard outing i.e. “On The Trail”, chiffon scarf fluttering in the breeze behind her voice in “Good To Be Around” or “ Lady (With The Tangerine Blouse)” and of course passionate moments on •Bacalov’s “The Key Witness”. And of course we added two songs by our demigods Paul Williams and Roger Nichols “The Drifter” and “It’s Hard To Say Goodbye”.
Despite the title that suggests spooky and dark sounds, we find that her music is very pop, bright, happy, funny even at times. Rita delivers breathy and utterly charming vocals as if she were seducing you. It is plausible to imagine that her as a mermaid, out of water, now in human form, female perfection.
Rita Calypso is a goddess of the female vocals in sophisticated environments and her partners in crime, Ramón Leal and Mateo Guiscafré are her equal. After her participation in the trilogy Sol y sombra, Educacion y descanso and Información y Turismo it was only a question of time and public request that the inhouse producers would device a well-arranged record with a tasteful selection of orchestral songs, crystal clear strings and trumpets. The result is a pop treasure of 13 stunning tracks and a very nice production that puts Leal & Guiscafré next to Tommy LiPuma, Eumir Deodato, Albert Gorgoni, Augusto Algueró or Charles Fox.
Siesta has a knack for fashioning simple, yet perfectly formed pop records. The albums are executed perfectly and the imagination never stops. Iot is also plausible to imagine Rita singing while strolling through a meadow of sunflowers, breezes gently blowing her hair...
Finally: Do not mistake our Rita for the homonymous German transvestite. Our Rita is very feminine and not a drag artist!!
If you love those eternal records Rita is your ticket to paradise.
paper mache
Rita Calypso Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
eighty people watch a TV show
paper people, cardboard dreams
how unreal the whole thing seems
Can we be living in a world
made of paper mache
everything is clean and so neat
can be just swept away
spray it with cologne
and the whole world smells sweet
Ice-cream cones and candy bars
swings and things like bicycles and cars
there is a sale on happiness
you buy two and it costs less
Can we be living in a world
made of paper mache
everything is clean and so neat
anything that's wrong
can be just swept away
spray it with cologne
and the whole world smells sweet
Read the papers keep aware
While you're lounging in your leather chair
And if things don't look so good
shake your head and knock on wood
Can we be living in a world
made of paper mache
everything is clean and so neat
anything that's wrong
can be just swept away
spray it with cologne
and the whole world smells sweet
Like paper mache
, the world that Rita Calypso sings about is a fragile and superficial one that lacks substance and is dangerously unaware of the problems surrounding it. The opening lines suggest a conformist neighborhood of twenty houses in a row, where eighty people are engrossed in a TV show. The imagery of paper people and cardboard dreams symbolizes their hollow existence, devoid of imagination and real aspirations. The singer wonders if this is the world we live in, where everything is just a facade, easily swept away like paper.
The chorus reinforces this idea further by suggesting that the world is a paper mache one that masks the truth under a clean and sweet-smelling surface. The verses that follow list everyday items like ice-cream cones, candy bars, bicycles, and cars that are sold as happiness. The irony lies in the fact that these materialistic things only add to the emptiness of people's lives. The singer paints a picture of a society that does not want to confront reality, requiring people to shake their heads and knock on wood when things appear to be going wrong.
The song's overall message seems to be that people should avoid pursuing superficial pleasures and try to look beyond the paper-thin world to understand and face the actual problems around them. By mentioning paper mache, Rita Calypso emphasizes the false and unsatisfying nature of this world, warning that it will not hold up in the face of reality.
