I'm Old Fashioned
Rita Hayworth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am not such a clever one
About the latest fads
I admit I was never one
Adored by local lads
Not that I ever try to be a saint
I'm the type that they classify as quaint
I'm old fashioned
I love the moonlight
I love the old fashioned things
The sound of rain
Upon a window pane
The starry song that April sings
This year's fancies
Are passing fancies
But sighing sighs holding hands
These my heart understands
I know I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

Oh won't you stay old fashioned with me
Oh please stay old fashioned with me

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Rita Hayworth's I'm Old Fashioned reveal the singer's attitude towards contemporary trends and fads. The singer suggests that they are not one who keeps up with the latest fads or styles; they would rather cherish the old fashioned things in life. The singer, through the lyrics, sets a nostalgic tone that is influenced by things that used to matter. The singer admits that they are never an object of adoration among the 'local lads', but they don't seem to mind. The use of 'quaint' to classify oneself carries an air of charm and uniqueness. The singer highlights that even though they may not be categorized as a saint or live a saintly life, they prefer holding on to old fashioned habits, which they admit are fading away over time.

As the song progresses, the singer goes on to provide some examples of the old fashioned things they cherish in life. They love the moonlight, the sound of raindrops falling on a window sill, and the song that April sings - a throwback to an old romantic movie symphony. The singer knowingly accepts that this year's fancies are short-lived, but the thing they understand and prefer are moments of being close to someone special. The act of holding hands, sighing longingly, and cherishing each other are examples of holding on to the good things in life. The singer confesses that while they know they are old fashioned, they don't mind it as long as the person they are with agrees to stay old fashioned with them.

@arrascaetadora7560

A mí no me da el entendimiento, soy corta seguro,para compartir el disfrute de las músicas y bailes de ahora.Sean perreos o electronicos o lo que sean.
Soy vieja y antigua sin duda,
me encanta ésta música y baile.
Pero ni ahí boba o tarada ya que bien clarito tengo cómo me enamoraba de los muchachitos .Ahora se terminó.
Está todo muy cambiado.

Los gustos, las estéticas, las sensibilidades,las ordenanzas,que en fin

a dónde iremos a parar.

They don’t make movie stars like this anymore.

I love all of Astaire's partnerships, but I think this is
my favorite. Love this Kern/Mercer song sung beautifully by Nan Wynn and dubbed flawlessly by Hayworth. Such amazing chemistry between Astaire and Hayworth. I am obsessed with these classic films and music, and am sure I was born into the wrong generation. Glad we have TCM and YouTube to enjoy the past.

Pure magic. Hollywood reigned supreme. Now I know why.

@Pheebs77

I cry from 2:26 onwards. So beautiful. There will never be stars like these again. In my fantasy wedding, we dance this routine to this song.....

❤ that's lovely

I wish that your fantasy could come true.

@Pheebs77

I love Fred Astaire and Ginger but my eyes are always on Astaire, but with Rita Hayworth they're a perfect match and she's absolutely as elegant as he is. My eyes are drawn even more to her. She's perfect.

@kittygattina4271

Exactly! I was about to write the same thing. Every other partner looks like they are trying to keep up, and you can see the effort. Rita Hayworth is so naturally supple and graceful. Her carriage is perfect, but she throws herself into the moves with some abandon. Yet always looks like she is truly enjoying the music and dance. No other partner masters the dance enough to just relax and enjoy the moment. With every other partner Astaire dominates, but this is a real dance partnership.

Fred said she was his favorite partner, though not on the record.
