She grew up in Jamaica, and was singing with a trio named The Soulettes in the mid sixties recording for Studio One when she met Bob Marley. She married him in 1966, and then became a singer in his backing vocals group, the I Threes. She had three children with him and two outside of the marriage. She converted to the Rastafari movement after witnessing Haile Selassie on his visit to Kingston, Jamaica on 21 April 1966. She convinced Bob Marley to convert as well. She wrote many of the songs recorded by Bob while backing him.[citation needed] After Marley's death, she recorded few albums under her name with some success in the United Kingdom. She took care of Marley's estate and mentored her son, Ziggy Marley.
In January 2005 it was claimed that she wished Bob Marley's body be reburied in Ethiopia, but she denied that there were any such plans. Rita currently lives in Ghana and spends a lot of time in Florida, and sometimes her home in Jamaica. Some of her family reside in Canada.

Why is this cheatin' and backbitin' I wanna know I wanna know now
We should really love each other In peace and harmony
Instead of here we're fussin' and fightin' Like we ain't supposed to be
Why is this fussin' and fightin' I wanna know, yes I wanna know
Why is this bumpin' and a borin' I wanna know Lord I wanna know now
Instead of here we're fussin' and fightin' Dem working iniquity
Why is this fussin' and fightin' I wanna know yes I wanna know now
Why is this cheatin' and backbitin' I wanna know I wanna know how
We should really love each other In peace and harmony
Instead of here we're fussin' and fightin' Like we ain't supposed to be
Why is this fussin' and fightin' I wanna know yes I wanna know now
Why is this cheatin' and backbitin' I wanna know I wanna
know how
In Rita Marley's song Fussin' and Fighting, she expresses a longing for peace and harmony, questioning why there is so much conflict, cheating, and backbiting in relationships. The repetition of the lines "I wanna know, yes I wanna know" emphasizes her frustration and desire for answers. She emphasizes the importance of loving each other in peace and unity, rather than engaging in negative behavior that goes against what we are meant to be.
The lyrics of the song are a powerful commentary on the state of interpersonal relationships and the need for love and unity. Rita Marley uses her music to speak truth to power and to inspire listeners to create positive change in their lives and communities. The song also holds significance as a message of hope and resilience during a time of political unrest in Jamaica, where violence was rampant and tensions were high.
