Reaping Loneliness
Ritual Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Afraid to leave these saving walls.
Scared of this world, scared of it all.
You're a machine keeping yourself from what you feel.
Loneliness is what you've sown.
Loneliness is what you'll reap.
You sold your dreams so fucking cheap.
You're in too deep.
You crushed your desires.
You have no beliefs.
Where is your conscience?
You're in too deep.
You're a machine keeping yourself from what you feel.
Who could save you?

No pain is permanent.
Nothing is permanent.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ritual's song "Reaping Loneliness" speak about the sense of fear and despair that one experiences when they are unable to truly connect with the world around them. The first verse builds up an image of someone who is so afraid of the world, that they are trapped within the confines of their own mind. They have built "saving walls" around themselves to protect themselves from the world that they perceive as dangerous and frightening. However, in doing so, they have created a sort of emotional detachment and have become like a machine, disconnected from reality and unable to feel the things that make life worth living.

The lyrics then transitions into the idea that the loneliness that this person feels is not something external or imposed upon them, but something that they have brought upon themselves. They have "sown" their own loneliness by disconnecting from others and refusing to engage with the world around them. The use of the phrase "You sold your dreams so fucking cheap" reinforces this idea- that in refusing to engage with the world, the person in the song has given up on their own hopes and desires in life. The repetition of the phrase "You're in too deep" reinforces the sense of despair and hopelessness that this person feels.

The final lines of the song- "Who could save you?/No pain is permanent./Nothing is permanent."- are a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak picture. They suggest that perhaps there is a chance of overcoming the loneliness and despair that the person is experiencing, even if it may be difficult and painful. The lyrics of the song are rich with metaphor and imagery, painting a vivid portrait of a person trapped by their own fears and insecurities.
