Couldn't see it at first
Losing parts of myself
I was trying to help
But you brought me down
First you take what you need
Then you take what you want
So you pushed me out
Didn't need you, you came up in conversation
Soon as they mentioned your name
I didn't need to hear
I know exactly what you're doing
Starting with my touch
Your body
His bed
I heard you're using again
I heard you're using
I'm like, "Oh my God"
You're off me, who's next?
I heard you're using again
I heard you're using
It was fun but it hurt
Losing me and myself
Such a heavenly hell
So why do you always burn?
Did you realize I'd gone?
Know I shouldn't return
But I'd just do it again
Dreamers never learn
I didn't need you, you came up in conversation
Soon as they mention your name
I didn't need to hear
I know exactly what you're doing
Starting with my touch
Your body
His bed
I heard you're using again
I heard you're using
I'm like, "Oh my God"
You're off me, who's next?
I heard you're using again
I heard you're using
I heard you're using
I heard you're using again
I heard you're pushing
Starting with my touch (my touch)
Your body (your body)
His bed (and his bed)
I heard you're using again
I heard you're using (mm)
I'm like, "Oh my God" (my God)
You're off me (you're off me, yeah)
Who's next?
I heard you're using again
I heard you're using
The lyrics of Ritual Emily Warren's song "Using" describe the pain and frustration that comes with watching a loved one spiral downwards as they battle addiction. The singer is torn between wanting to help this person and protecting themselves from the toxic impact of drug use. The verse "Couldn't see it at first/Losing parts of myself/I was trying to help/But you brought me down" speaks to the leading role addiction takes in the addict's life, then the chorus - "Starting with my touch/Your body/His bed/I heard you're using again/I heard you're using/I'm like, 'Oh, my God,' /You're off me, who's next?" - hints at the codependency that arises in relationships where one party is an addict, and the others are trying to help.
The lyric "So why do you always burn?" is particularly evocative, seemingly referring to the way in which addiction destroys everything it touches or the sensation of being consumed by its fire. The statement "Dreamers never learn" implies that the singer has been in a similar situation before but keeps getting pulled back into it. Overall, the theme of addiction looms large throughout the song- the lyrics function as a warning sign against avoiding the burden of addiction and the heartbreak and helplessness that can come with being close to someone battling addiction.
